Are women being tricked into aborting healthy pregnancies?

Having just read the article, "Mother's instinct saves her son after blundering doctors wrongly say baby has died in the womb", it got me wondering how often this "mistake" is made and how many other healthy pregnancies are "accidently" terminated.

A woman who was told her baby had died in the womb in a devastating medical blunder has celebrated her son's first birthday. Michael was declared dead during a scan carried out when his mother Melissa Redmond was just eight weeks pregnant. The mother from Donabate near Dublin was issued with labour-inducing medication but her mother's instinct drove her to seek a second opinion.

Her case sparked a huge review of maternity services in Ireland where it was found the same thing had happened to 23 women over the last five years.

When she went for the eight-week scan at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda she was distraught to be told she had miscarried again.

She and her IT specialist husband Michael, 44, took the painful decision to have a D&C procedure - also known as a dilation and curettage - to have their 'dead' child removed.

The operation was scheduled for two days later on July 24 and Melissa was also given the abortive drug, Cytotec, to take on the morning of the operation.

However, Melissa's mothering instinct kicked in and she decided to visit her local GP to seek a second opinion.

To both Melissa and Michael's disbelief, the GP's surgery filled instantly with the sound of their unborn son's heart, beating strongly.

Relief soon turned to anger as Melissa realised that had she taken the Cytotec - a powerful abortive drug - that she would have killed her own baby without even knowing.

Both she and her husband now want to highlight the shocking hospital blunders and faulty equipment that led to the misdiagnosis.

Michael said: 'There are so many other mothers this could have happened to.

'Their children could have died - viable children.'

According to the article, A review by the Health Service Executive (HSE) found inadequate staff training and over-reliance on ultrasound led to 24 women being wrongly told they had suffered a miscarriage.

How many other healthy babies have been mistakingly aborted for the same "reasons"? How often does this happen?

I am a living example of a mother's resiliance against the medical establishment.

When she was carrying me, 40 years ago now... she had over 20 tumors in her uterus along with me. One of the tumors weighed over 25 pounds. She was told that she needed to have an abortion in order to save her life.

She refused adamantly and said that whatever happens would happen and she would deal with it as it came.

Well, here I am. She had to have a hysterectomy because of the tumors but she bore through the pain and suffering that came with those tumors being in her with me and is alive and well today.

I'm very grateful to her, and, in fact, she lives with my wife, children and I now for us to care for her. I call it simple payback.

Granted, there's days she can be grumpy as all hell and is half crazy, but... whatever happens will happen and I will deal with it as it comes.


Anyhow... just had to give a personal side to a story like this

The moral of the story is, always, ALWAYS seek for 2 and more opinions.
Even professional athletes who have access to the best treatments seek many diagnosis.

I don't know if I go with the whole "tricked into abortion" theory but it IS a possibility for sure. I think the real take away from this (assuming it's NOT a real conspiracy) is what the poster above me said about second/third/fourth opinions. Too many people get complacent and take for granted that "doctor knows best". We had a saying in school that went like this: "what do you call the guy who graduates in last place from Med School? You call him doctor!" So remember, C's make Degrees and just because someone is licensed doesn't mean they're the best or most knowledgeable. That goes for more than OB/GYN's but Cardiologists, Surgeons, Anesthetists, Nurses, Lab Techs, etc... Also works for mechanics and drivers....lol

Lest not ponder on things in the past, sure a life is lost but decisions were made and we have to assume that good prevails.
There are so many factors in these matters that it's difficult to ensure the accuracy of things.

Wouldn't the use of the word "tricked" in your headline imply that there was motive?? I don't see any motive in the article. What motive did you see. Perhaps you might have an agenda.

Mistakes happens all the time and in this age and time of "everything medical for profits" we are expose more than ever to errors, that actually are profitable for somebody else.

People just needs to be more aware of what their doctors tell them, get information, facts and second opinions before getting any procedures done.
