USGS

Magnitude 3.3
Date-Time

Sunday, May 08, 2011 at 04:32:20 UTC
Saturday, May 07, 2011 at 10:32:20 PM at epicenter

Location 44.818°N, 110.992°W
Depth 6.6 km (4.1 miles)
Region YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, WYOMING

I'm not an expert, but I don't think this is a good place to have rumbles.

Does anybody know if EQ happened below or near the supervolcanoe?

Shallow depth of 4.1 miles could indicate magma movement...which would not be a good thing considering the circumstances.

USGS mentions that the top of the chamber is 8km deep and the bottom is 16km deep. So it's possible that it centered in it, if it was over the chamber.

I don't know if it really means anything. In Jan 2010 therre were more than 250 earthquakes there over a two day period. I recently read that the earth around it had risen I can't remember how much.

That's very true, I remember that. They must have not been that strong since I don't believe any of them registered on the USGS. Same thing for Alabama.

This is a significant quake for the park. However, without any other signs or further events, it is nothing to write home about.

I did provide a link on the Yellowstone thread pointing out some odd signatures prior to the quake though. I will await others with better interpretive abilities to have a go at it.

seismo

I wouldn't be too concerned.

It is not in the current caldera however it and 4 small under 2 pointers all happened with in the last week, are very close to the Hedgen Lake site where the 7.5 happened in 1959.

Quakes in the US register on seismographs on the other side of the globe and vice versa, regardless of how big or small they are EVEN the ones in Alabama. The quake history in real time available to us on the main USGS site, and that's without localizing your searches, is a general list. You can look up local seismographs in California, and around the globe. So in reality, nearly every quake everywhere is recorded by seismographs all over the world.

As for the die offs, if it was a sulfur, not only animals would be dying, but trees, plants, insects and anything else that would be directly next to or above a sulfur leak. Do we have any reports about that? Anything to suggest the change in air quality? Water quality? Etc. All I am saying, is that its NOT likely anything to do with the volcano erupting, at least not yet. We would probably be very well aware of any large eruption to come from that volcano. Being the largest volcano on on the earth's surface (above the water), the activity (large scale even) that will/does take place at it doesn't go unnoticed so easily.
