Libya: blood bonanza for contractors

rt.com

Libya might soon turn into a goldmine for private security firms. Reports say that the UK is already hiring mercenaries to protect the interests of the big corporations there, once Colonel Gaddafi goes.
But the fresh history of the previous NATO-led interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan give a pretty clear picture of how exactly the big men with guns could turn this civil war-torn country into a proper Wild West.
To the world, homeless and displaced people, disrupted water and electricity supplies, and decimated infrastructure might be tragic scenes of the destruction of lives, while to Brit

I apologise in advance if this has been previously posted, a search has yielded no results.
It is evident, that if it is in the best interests of multi-national corporations to hire private military contractors to defend their investments, that they have then profited from the unfortunate circumstances surrrounding Libya. The private military sector displays laissez-faire economics in it's extremist forms. If we are to entrust corporations with the ability to take life(which is deeply sickening and wrong in the first place) then we should atleast striclty regulate their actions.

Dear SpeachM1litant,

Thanks for the article. Couple of points to add, much like Iraq it's an illegal war and again much like Iraq it is all about oil rights.

But, let's all cover it up with nice pictures of planes bombing T72 tanks and such and make the public believe we're there for anything but monetary reasons.

The added bonus is going to be for Haliburton who's going to help rebuild, yay! /sarcasm off.

Cheers,
T

So the UK is paying for mercs to protect private companies? That doesnt make any sense the cost of mercs should be paid by the companies not the govt. All of this corprate welfare needs to stop.

If you look at merc use in Iraq and Afghanistan, then it makes perfect sense.

The private corporations providing imperialist wealth to the invaders require mercs. Why? Because if it was government troops then it would be pretty damn obvious that private entities control the actions of the military.

On top of this, governments are not responsible for the actions of the mercs they hire (since they are outsourced by private companies). That means that the mercs can protect the drug trade, weapons deals, resource exploitation, conduct special operations (like capturing high-value targets or assassinations), etc.

This is why the US employed over 100,000 mercs in Iraq at one point. Of course they were referred to as "private contractors" because that sounds friendlier.
