This post aims to collect methods for breaking down the nature of said phenomenon (rumbling sound) into useful quantities (direction of source, distance of source, frequency, decibels, other sound properties the specialists are familiar with, etc.).

Sound experts are invited to help out with the technicals.

I'll start:

To anyone who hears the sounds, it seems that determining where it's coming from is the first priority.

I suggest trying this out:

-Get 2 long tubes (the longer the better) of the same length, preferably the long cylindrical cores of tissue paper rolls. Have them ready and accessible at any time.
-When you hear the rumbling sound, go out into an open space.
-Hold one tube on each of your ears, making sure the tubes point away from your head.
-Move your head around.
-If there is enough detectible variation in the sounds, you will be able to better determine which direction the sound is coming from with more precision than with using your bare ears.
-Look for visual anomalies coming from that direction.

---

If you have a camera that takes infrared, point it in that direction.

---

Also, I hope some sound engineers here get a hold of the audio track of these sounds. You guys might be able to tell us something about it.

Also once you have direction information, try going to maps.google.com, figure your location, then draw a line representing the direction of sound source. See if it lines up with known places like airports, factories, launch pads, military bases, etc.

Why is this in the UFOs and Aliens forum?

S&F if only for the picture of someone standing and swivelling in the middle of the street with long cardboard tubes held to each ear.

It sounds like it would actually work, too. Nothing like getting down to basics to solve an unusual problem.

a tinfoil hat could also help ,with the pic anyway.

This is VERY intelligent. Breaking the hysteria of the event down into basic deductive techniques. This shows a calm reasoning mind. More importantly, I think it could work. I'll keep my ears and cardboard tubes open.

Yeah, i think it should be moved to Fragile Earth or something...

ok, so your basiclay asking everyone worldwide to prepare these tubes, and have them ready. Just in case it starts rumbling?

Most likely the rumbling catches you by surprise, like it did with me the other evening. Im in Sweden btw.

Anyways, good idea but it just wont work. Or are the rumbling returning for some. Here it was only 1 evening. Havent heard it since.

Sounded like a big engine in the sky roraring. And it was moving.
Suddelnly it just stopped a couple of times, and then start again.

It was defenetly NOT som earthquakeish vibration or of sort.
Defenetly machine-made of some sort.

BIg fricking UFO sounds like the most accurate explanation yet. That was what I thought while listening to the sound for these 15 minutes,

Jönköping Sweden that is (if anyone is updating any google map on this)

This is what is being talked about... note the flash and the cessation of the noise at about 7 mins

Well, maybe a better idea pops in this thread, hopefully.

I haven't heard it yet, but if I do, I plan to get as much info as I can with whatever tools I have available.

As soon as I have a personal record of such an event, I'll definitely email the audio track to my friends who know audio better than I do.

yes, it sounded just like that.
But the video distorts the sound, making it sound more earthquake-like. In reality it was pretty easy to locate that the sound originated from above. (in my case anyway)
It was not some underground sound "bouncing up" or anything like that. More of a hovering sound, and it even sounded like "they" increased the throttle from time to time. If the sound wouldnt have stayed for 15 minutes would have guessed airplane of some sort. But the sound stayed in basiclly the same area for the whole time even if I could hear it move further away and then return a few times.
The strangest was when the sound 3 or 4 times completely stopped for a second or two, and then return.
Really weird.

I'm not a big fan of UFOs and aliens, but this made me feel there is some kind of (alien)-invasion going on. After finding all threads about it here on ats, I really spooked out. This is not normal my friends.

Im no expert, but I would have a hard time accepting this as a nature-phenomena.
Like I said. Engine. must have been.
Very deep tone. Almost "wobbling" and moving in a pattern (my conclusion by listening to the sound. how it moved)

Cloudy that evening, but I could feel (hear) that it was right there. behind those clouds.

whatever it was.... ??

I'm officially freaked out

The flash... why is it there? Would have been easier had the trees not blocked the view.

I think I'll need bigger cardboard tubes...

Well... I don't have any more ideas!

I'll check this thread once in a while and see maybe new ideas come up...

Bye bye for now

Without too much background, which I know will frustrate all of you, we are very concerned about the rumblings, lights and movement of the earth in the last few days. I would like to thank this site for doing what it can do gather more information about this current event that seems to be happening worldwide. I am the director of a group of people that work on events that are of a level where most governments do not like to acknowledge. It didn't take us long to realize that what is happening to this earth far outweighs anything that might be happening in regards to terrorism. This site is filled with quite intelligent people and having read some of your posts and threads I can see how quickly you can disseminate information.
After the 9.0 in Japan we watched the rest of world go into a seismic rest, almost to a full stop except the epicenter of course. Seismic activity worldwide dropped drastically and is still way below normal levels. It appeared as if the crust was jammed. We theorized that if this were so, we would have people writing in and talking about rumbling, flashes of light and shaking of the earth. This appears to be happening.
We knew that Japan was going to have a massive earthquake two days before it hit and generated e-mails to people we knew so we would be able to verify that we knew and might be on to something. We look
for patterns and aberrations of said patterns and what we saw in the Honshu area was a series of quakes, one of which was at 2 kilometers and that was extremely disturbing to us. We now are worried about Arkansas and the guy/greenbrier and new madrid fault systems, basically because it is a rift system and has been ramping up it's seismic activity in a way that indicates it might be massive. We have had earth rips happening all over the planet, and these too indicate crustal deformation. These noises and rumblings are very disturbing and all people in these zones should be getting water filter systems and storing up food to eat. I think tracking these events are worthy, however getting people prepared and warned is best because this event could happen much sooner than later. As you well know governements can be quite useless in these situation.....

I've heard a similar sound before. But this was June 29th, 2009 and it was somewhere between 1 - 2am. I was sleeping and woken up by this sound. It happened twice. The first time was in February of 2009. Not sure of the exact date but it was also in the middle of the night, while I was sleeping. I got woken up to what I described at that time, sounded like a garbage can the size of a house, getting dragged across the ground. It lasted for a good minute. The next time I heard it, was June 29th, 2009. It was the same sound, only much louder and closer? maybe. It was so loud and scary sounding that I'd woken up out of my sleep, jumped up, ran into the kitchen and ducked down to the ground with my hands on my head/ears, not knowing whether something was about to crash into my house or what. It didn't sound like it was coming from above me however, it sounded like it was on the ground. There are so many things I can describe it as, yet none of them really feel accurate to me. I could say it sounded like another huge garbage can the size of a house getting dragged across the ground, or I could say it sounded like a train running on the street, not tracks, headed right in my direction. Whatever it was, the sound lasted for about 2 minutes (or at least that's how it felt, I could be wrong) and then instantly stopped. I didn't go to the window until after the sound had passed, because of how scared I was, but I didn't see anything. About a minute later, that same sound returned, only it sounded very distant this time and only lasted about a minute. Considering how distant it sounded to me, I went to the window while hearing it this time, but didn't see anything.
I'm 30 years old and have never head a sound like this. I've never heard it again, but I'm wondering now since a lot of other people are starting to hear it, if I will. If I should, as scared as I may be, I will be sure to get this sound recorded and maybe even run outside but I can't guarantee anything.

By the way, I do live 4 or 5 miles from an airport, however it's not a main/big one. And even so, if it were a plane, I've absolutely never heard one fly that low or close. I really don't think what I heard was a plane. The way it sounded to me, was as if it were coming from the ground.
