FIRST X-FLARE OF THE NEW SOLAR CYCLE: Earth-orbiting satellites detected an X2-class solar flare at 0156 UT on Feb. 15th. This is the most powerful solar flare in nearly five years, and the first X-flare of Solar Cycle 24. The source was behemoth sunspot 1158.

This X-class flare erupted from the same sunspot 1158 that the M-class flare erupted from on Saturday.

Just an observation.

I will also say that this is an X2.2 event... the largest we've had in recent history was the X6 event we had on Bastille day 2000.

Though a very interesting event, I doubt this will be remembered any more than the Bastille day event.

I find it interesting that 2 flares from the same spot have been emitted and the second is much stronger then the first. What are the chances of more flares from this same sunspot and what are the chances that they get progressively worse if they do occuur?

Well, that particular sunspot is already rotating away from Earth now so any further eruptions from it over the next week will be directed away from us. The sun is getting very active so far this year and worth monitoring if you're into that kind of thing. www.spaceweather.com... is a good site to visit to keep an eye on things.

My power just went out for about 10 minutes and came back on... the whole town I live in was dark, no lights anywhere... It isn't windy or anything...
