Just back from Etna watch in this moment. This has been a typical lava fountain from the Southeast Crater (that is, the vent on its east flank which seems to have completely taken over the job from the old vent at its top), with jets rising 300-500 m – maybe a bit more – and lasting for little more than one hour. We saw 66 (sixty-six) of these events in the year 2000, some lasted only 10 minutes but were up to 1000 m tall. Now we will see if there will be more of these fountains – they rarely come alone.
If this is happening in Sicily you're not going to find any 'witnesses'.
Later that evening intense incandescence from the pit crater was reported by observers in the village of S. Alfio on the E flank of Etna.
