Sudan border clashes kill 36 as south votes: officials

At least 36 people have died in clashes between tribespeople and Arab nomads near Sudan's north- south border, leaders in the contested Abyei region said on Monday, on the second day of a vote on southern independence.

Sudan, you will remember, was the home of the genocide that took place in Darfur and was largely ignored by most western countries. Oh, sure western leaders made their UN resolutions, they put their faces on TV to decry the violence, but they did not commit to ending the violence.

Now we have major governments keenly aware of this referendum to split the country in half, north and south. These governments want to make sure the split of the country goes smoothly and have sent in high-profile celebs like George Clooney to whitewash the voting process.

But what we must ask ourselves, is why the sudden interest in keeping the south safe? Why now, now that the violence has ebbed?

Maybe the fact that Sudan has almost 7 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and they are all in the south? See the energy-pedia link. Keep an eye on Sudan.

My prediction is the referendum will pass, the south will break off and then the violence will start when the money from oil sales stops flowing to the Muslim-dominated north Sudan. Then we will have a pretext to send in UN peacekeepers or US troops to secure the southern Christians from another genocide.

But really, it will be about securing the oil. As I've aways said, we don't protect or save people unless their land has something we can exploit.

Indeed!

Soon as the North and south split, the south will start fighting amongst themselves and the US/UN will 'aid' them to stop any future wars.What that really means is US/UN will secure the oil fields in the name of providing 'peace'.While the corrupt Sudanese leaders will cut the oil share with the Multi-national oil companies and retire in the West after their terms are over.

Reminds me how Dick Cheney paid $500Mil to Nigerian leaders and told them to shut up and sit down like good little loyal puppies and not file any case against him in UN due to the Delta oil issue.

Yes, it is our problem.

Khartoum does most of its business with China, which desires Sudanese oil and has acquired deals from the Khartoum government. Wiki. If the West wins over the southern government and takes over oil concessions, then China will be cut out of the loop on a major source of oil.

Oil is the Khartoum government's main source of income. It is likely to wage war on the South again if it feels threatened by the loss of its oil. Sudan's massive military buildup (mostly purchased form China) is evidence that it is preparing for major offensive action. When this happens, various Western countries and their oil claims in the South will be threatened.

France, Sweden, Malaysia, Austria, China, Qatar and Belgium have concessions in Southern Sudan. Canada has concessions in Northern Sudan. Some of these are NATO allies of the USA.

It is our problem because the western colonial system setup the idea of invisible borders that causes a lot of the violence in Africa in the first place.

Adding another border is only going to heighten the violence.

Personally I think every ethnic group in Africa should have their own country. That way, they wouldn't bicker over imaginary lines....
