China speeds plans to launch aircraft carrier: sources

news.yahoo.com

BEIJING (Reuters) – China may be ready to launch its first aircraft carrier in 2011, Chinese military and political sources said on Thursday, a year ahead of U.S. military analysts' expectations.

Analysts expect China to use its first operational aircraft carrier to ensure the security of its oil supply route through the Indian Ocean and near the disputed Spratly Islands, but full capability is still some years away.

"The period around July 1 next year to celebrate the (Chinese Communist) Party's birthday is one window (for launch)," one source with ties to the leadership told Reut

So should we be concerned about China's launching of the carrier? Could it be the start of more carriers behind this one? What would the other Asian powers response to this? More defense spending on submarines perhaps their own aircraft carriers, possible war over the region especially the oil rights in South China Sea, more importantly Taiwan. Whats more disturbing that it was suppose to be a casino ship but the owner was a former PLAN officer and the carrier was suddenly taken over by the PLAN. Article says it could take decades for them to master carrier operations, but I say about 10 years.

It is concerning that all of sudden nations are now building up there military. From ground forces to now carriers. However, China may attempt to establish a carrier group, but I think the article is right, the learning curve for the carrier will be something of a challenge. Not to say they cant overcome these challenges, but look how many years it took for us the US to achieve Naval superiority.

Sadly, i think they may experience many losses of life to this " trial and error " program.

Wow, that was fast, I'm impressed, It's only a matter of time now, before they have a handful. Didn't they say to the Russians that it will be for civilian purposes only?

The more prudent among the Chinese strategists caution against building aircraft carriers. They argue that blind pursuit of maritime ambitions might put Beijing on a premature collision course with the world’s dominant naval power, the United States. Those advocating that China should bide its time propose that Beijing must concentrate instead on defensive naval capabilities that will deny ocean spaces near its teritory to the United States. The indication in the last couple of years has been that the nationalists might be winning the argument. When China announced its decision last December to dispatch a flotilla to the Gulf of Aden, the first Chinese naval mission away from its shores, it dropped a hint that major decisions may have already been made on the carriers.

Would seem some of their own see this as a prelude to war.

"China has the capability to build aircraft carriers and should do so," he added in remarks that will fuel speculation that, after two decades of research, China is ready commission its first carrier. The comments come two days after China announced a 14.9 per cent increase in defence spending for 2009, a rise that will have seen total Chinese military spending increase by more than 50 per cent since 2006

The Chinese navy has been lobbying for permission to build an aircraft carrier since the 1980s, but analysts say it has been over-ruled by the country's Central Military Commission anxious that China's rise should not appear to upset regional security balances.

IMO, I think its attempt to show the " world " there alleged dominance in the region. Fear factor maybe?
Regardless, its not something to take lightly.

Truely does anyone realise that even this one carrier will be outnumbered ten to one?
There are few aircraft carriers in existance even, france has one, the UK has one, Russia has one or two, and thats about it...The US outnumbers all carriers in the world 2 to 1....or better.

Maybe for now ... but how much longer will the US be able to afford to run it's 10+ carrier fleets?

China, on the other hand, has trillions of $ in her kitty

It's nothing to be surprised at, so many countries have aircarft carriers, there's nothing wrong with China to have one ,this doesn't mean that they will give up their road of developing peacefully...

In the next 10 to 20 years China will be able to produce a dozen aircraft carriers, perhaps even more if they love the carriers that met their expectations in any possible conflicts in the future. They are already building an ocean navy with a vast number of subs and frigates and destroyers. As well as aircraft. Already Russia is hesitant to export anything else to them.

I dont think you understand how the world works and what position the US is TRULY in and not what folks in the general pop or on ATS knows.

The US doesnt have to "AFFORD" anything. It still has the military power to take whatever it needs (if it came to that). And thousands of nukes also ensures the country wont ever go away. Look at Russia...from the brink and back. Nukes is the reason why.

If the US were to collapse, it could take the whole world with it.....a lot of folks in power across the globe realize this. They dont ever want the US to get SO weak that it just took the whole house down including itself....because it could........

I think that once China launches their first Aircraft carrier, there will be more following and probably already under construction. They are the production capital of the world.
Didnt I read here at ATS that China also have some kind of submarine base for construction of subs and storage of them? Built into the side of cliff. There were some GE images.. (i will have to look for)

New Russian carrier, lol!

The US has two decommissioned conventional(non-nuclear) powered carriers sitting in shipyards somewhere(the JFK and Kitty Hawk). The US owes China a lot of money, maybe give them one of those relics as a debt payment and goodwill gesture would be a good idea.

Before I get blasted about how bad of an idea that is, look at it this way: we have 11(correct me if Im wrong) nuclear powered carriers plus a bunch of smaller LHDs so tactically they still won't have anything on us. We know about everything there is to know about those old carriers and it is inevitable that China will eventually have one so again tactically it would be in the US's best interest for them to have one our old ones.
