I'm sure most of you are aware of the goings on in London of late regarding the riots by students against an increase in tuition fees, so I wont bore you with politics. I just thought I would highlight a couple of incidents that have been annoying me since they happened.

The first one being the discarded riot van.

Student Mob in Cop Van Rampage

But the Met is facing heavy criticism yet again for letting demonstrators smash up the police van in Whitehall.

Television viewers watched as a mob smashed windows on the empty vehicle with sticks and daubed graffiti on it before jumping on top of the vehicle.

One student was even seen urinating against the van as crowds swelled during the angry protest against rising university tuition costs.

www.thesun.co.uk...

Apparently, protesters surrounded the van as it followed one of the marches and the police officers inside felt “vulnerable”, so they abandoned the vehicle. However, the video in this article shows the police van shortly after it had parked up. As you can see, it is not attracting any attention and the surrounding atmosphere seems fairly calm. There is also a numerable police presence.

What apparently happened next was that the police began kettling protesters so that they would be contained within that precise area. From 12:58pm protesters are picked up on the microphones of Sky News cameras asking 'why has that van been left there?'. In my opinion it was used as bait. The 'abandoned van' is an old police tactic used to give the media their 'riot porn' pictures, and it worked.

Then we have what happened last night.

How did the anarchists get so close to Charles and Camilla?

The Duchess of Cornwall was terrified as she came under fire from a snarling mob of student fees rioters last night when the car carrying her and Prince Charles was kicked, rocked and hit with paint bombs.

A ‘steaming gang’ of masked protesters ambushed them as they were being driven to the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium, raising echoes of the 1974 kidnap attempt on Princess Anne.

www.dailymail.co.uk...

Once again you have to ask yourself; How did the anarchists get so close to Charles and Camilla? I mean, come on
Apparently they were escorted by three police outriders and an unmarked police car (not to mention their own royal protection squad officers, where were they?) and yet protesters were still able to get this close...

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/998b01d63255.jpg[/atsimg]

And of course, it is these images that cover the newspapers today, all begging sympathy for Prince Charles and (surprisingly so) Camilla.

Another thing that caught my attention was the following comment from Met chief Sir Paul Stephens, who said 'They (the attackers) were lucky not to be shot'. This much is very true, especially when you take moments like this into account. So why was such restraint shown?

Well, looking at the pictures of the 'protesters' surrounding the car, it's surprising to see that many of them don't look like students, they look far too old for that. Maybe I'm being a bit too cynical, but I couldn't help wonder if they had possibly been plants, given orders to do exactly what they did, to make the real protesters look even worse and garner sympathy for poor Charles and Camilla.

So, am I reading too much into things? Or is there a fair case to claim that events could very well have been manipulated?

Each one of these protesters deserve to be arrested, thrown in jail and repay EVERY PENNY of damage they caused

Funny you mention this about the "tactic" of leaving a police van as bait for demonstrators to pounce on,
I was in Belfast city centre yesterday watching The mature student "agent provocateurs" going about there work
And i noticed this double decker bus apparently abandoned and not on an authorized bus route,(lovely big target)

Just about then "the big grey taxi" turned up and started scooping the students, Mr agent provocateur, Starts the rallying call "LOOK their arresting the children", Makes you wonder, After all the police are facing huge cut backs as well,,,.

I'm talking about the property they destroyed, what right do they have to do that?
I'm all for peaceful protesting, but when you destroy property, I draw the line at that

You are right, the police do place moles in protest mobs for the specific reason to incite radical behavior. This is a well documented tactic. And the other guy is right, the rioters that caused damage should have to pay for that.
But I don't believe the age factor is something to take into account in such debates as this, as the ramifications go beyond students. It also may hit the parents, considering they are the ones who will put the money up initially, for the most part at least. Also, there were probably a lot of sympathizers beyond the scope of students and parents directly effected. I like to believe that there is a bit of sentimentality and empathy that permeates throughout all age circles for issues such as this, because everyone knows the importance of affordable education. Generally speaking, most people do not like it when a government takes money from them anyways, and worse, from students.

Very interesting. I just have a quick question - where were all the guns? I always heard growing up that the police in the UK didn't carry firearms, but I thought that was an old wives tale sort of. At any rate the article says they were lucky not to be shot, so someone in authority has guns there.

In America this is what a typical protest looks like:

I have many just like it from my personal collection, which I don't want to post. But you get the idea. People get shot dead here for making "threatening gestures" but in the UK they flee the van?

Never should have started this free-ride crap in the first place. Anyone with a brain knew it was unsustainable from the beginning. They just didnt care as long as it didnt come crashing down when they could use the free-ride.

Amazing in a world where people are willing to chop off their own hands to "keep the children safe" these same people are perfectly happy to bankrupt their children by taking advantage of a not-so-free free-ride while they can.

This is how subsidized anything and everything always ends up. It's absolute and inevitable.

People in the US are pissed because the gov wont stop spending and people in the rest of the world seem pissed because their governments wont continue spending.

I understand that but a true revolution atleast in American terms will be all of our 2nd amendment lovers to stand up with arms to take back this country to what is was meant to be. So in return that would be a hostile and destructive protest.

Every war has casualties. That's never stopped them from being fought before. At least it was property not people.

No its not correct. Protestors are not setting private houses on fire, their fighting cops and protesting corruption.

There is quite a stark difference between the two.

I say bravo. Take more cop cars, keep the protests strong and break their system down!

Dead on.

Too many of these idiot kids use generic protesting as an excuse to destroy private property or loot from homes and businesses.

They're angry idiots that arent even sure why they're angry.

The same kind of stupidity gets us the "our team just won the Super Bowl" riots. Nothing celebrates your city like trashing it and setting cars on fire.

You're assuming that what I said meant I didn't agree with you. This is an incorrect assumption.

ETA: In logical terms, not emotional terms. I don't share the same emotional response you're showing. Simply put, you are correct, that is illegal. Nobody gave them the right to do it, nor did I say they had obtained one.

Its called proving a point that we will not go quietly, which kind of seems what your generation did. Hey you have your views and we have ours. Its our mess to clean up since no one else cared. I mean when is enough, enough already? You need to make $50 an hr just to get started in this world anymore and maybe this is the sign of the peasants will take control once and for all. If your not for it stand by the wayside and watch, cause its gonna be a bumpy ride!

Thank you for your support and we will not let you down. I mean come on, between me and my girlfriend we make a combined $31 an hour and we honestly have no idea how we are going to afford our own house (which we are looking at today) and live comfortably. # will hit the fan and we WILL prevail because last I knew this country lived by the moto of " Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"
