I have noticed that, for some reason, over the past decade or so, it has become increasingly fashionable to insult someone by calling them a "hippie".

It seems to me that "hippies" were all about peace, love, and understanding their fellow man. Why is this considered so bad? Why all the hate on "hippies"? Unless "some people" wanted others to think that the power of love is a joke and ineffectual....what better way to do it than to try and a "laughingstock".

We are so many people insulting of "hippies", but those who start and fight in wars are considered "heroes"?

Most of the hippies I know are a joke. I said this in another post.. Most 'hippies' my age, are all burnt out druggies. They wear the tyedye, they listen to the dead, they go to festivals... and that's about it. They don't stand for anything. They don't care about what's going on in the world. Pretty much, those kinds of "hippies" are giving the real ones a bad name.

Nothing wrong with hippies.... good people is all they are... if they are the REAL deal.

Most of the hippies I know, have morphed into country folks... returned to the land, make a living there in tune with nature, generous and loving, still espouse their views... yet with a suprisingly conservative slant as they/we get older. Open to people of different beliefs and ideas, they don't take crap off of anyone.

At the same time, many of the so-called country folks have morphed into hippies... you have to really talk to both to find out which is which. Kinda cool really.

You haven't enjoyed a more unique experience than sitting in a country store...drinking coffee, eatinga bisquit from the grill...and hearing an old hippe and a couple of ol' farmers trading stories on goats, greens, and the best way to put up apples. Guess which on had just a butter bisquit and which ones got ham or sausage. Guess which one drives the pickup with a DeadHead sticker on the bumper and a shotgun in the gun rack.

About hippies, and the two Dionysian poles:

The negative Dionysian pole is related to the desires of the egos (drugs, orgies, etc.); whereas the positive Dionysian pole is of the Inherent Bliss of the Being (the Wine of Meditation, Chaste Sexuality, etc.).

Hippies are generally under the influence of the negative Dionsysian pole.

War and desire feed each other.

In the Buddhist teachings, it is taught that the three poisons (anger (war), desire (lust), and ignorance) are opposed to the Inherent Bliss of the Trikaya.

The Dionysian Wave

The Hippy peace symbol represents an inverted diagram of the Rune Man.

Our hand is a miniature pentagram, since it consists of a body with five points (fingers).

What is wrong with hippies nowdays? They have credit cards, mortgages, goverment money, guns, degrees, SUVs, suits, processed food, morality groups and zanex. That is what is wrong with hippies.

Agree with the commenter on the good hippies and bad hippies.

Usually when people say bad things about hippies they are referring to the "bad" hippies.

OP, if you have 20 minutes to spare I recommend you watch this South Park episode for fun and edification.

I don't think it's hippies per-se ... hell as a traditional witch I'm considered a hippy by the conventional types myself ... it's just that nowadays when we hear the word hippy (for me at least) it conjures up the image of a New-Age wannabe full to the brim with commercialism ... a more fitting term to describe such with any accuracy would be weekend hippies ... you know the kind ... the slaves to the system during the week who bring out the tie-dye t.shirts and gypsy skirts for festivals and weekend camping trips because they think it's 'cool man' !

For both real hippies and true witches alike it is not about the clothes ... it should be about a frame of mind and way of life !

I never really like hippies. The scums of the Earth acting like their all about peace, love, and harmony and then on the other hand want to bum whatever you have and if you don't confirm to their ways then you're evil. I hate hippies!

Hippies are walking human turds.

They are all about emotion without paying any attention to reality, fact, or intellect.

Hippies are basically overgrown children who want to avoid responsibility at all costs because that would require growing up and actually being an adult.

Now that I'm living in a town full of hippies, ( the actual true hippie, whom that takes no regard into their personal hygiene) I can tell you that they prefer to avoid responsibility, preach their liberal propaganda, and believe that they are truly knowledgeable in the ways of life. Yet they have proven to be misguided, and live in a fantasy world, a world with no true reality.
Those true hippies are a waste of human flesh and should be eradicated!

Well said woodwytch... most of the hippies I know live way out...as do I. They live in harmony with the land, they grow most of their food, think of the enviromental impact of their actions, they live pretty self sufficiently, yet have some pretty good tech jobs or have small farms...have several dairy goats and make and sell herbs and goat soap. Pretty laid back....mind your own business kinda folks.

They are my neighbors and friends... they are the hippies gone country...I am one of the country folks gone hippie...LOL I like the old native American analogy of the circle...go far enough on either side and end up on the other side. Their long hair got shorter, mine got longer

A great place to see this in effect is up in Floyd, Virginia. Little mountain town with more than a few enterprising old hippies.... welcome to the Republic of Floyd.

Love it !

I have been known to sugar-coat things.

I will make more of an effort to speak my mind from now on

Many labels have many different meanings to everyone, like art.
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
And yes, people people do change over time, as do the times we live in.
To me, hippy is not just a person, it was a time, and a way of thinking. That has long past away.
When people cared about the envirorment, world peace and equal rights for all.
The hippy movement got america out of VietNam , and fought for civil rights for blacks and women and won.
And if those are bad things, then I am guilty of being a hippy.

What you describe is not necessarily exclusive to "hippies"...infact, it can be applied to the subculture of any group or culture. Here in the country...we call these people trash. The kind that can do, but don't try to do... and never will.

Examples are "trailer park trash"..."white trash"... "bums"... and to go any further delves into so many negative stereotypes. Simply put.... some hippies are bums....not all bums are hippies.... same can be said of any group, race, culture, religion.

In any group, there are good and bad.... most of the true hippies I know are decent, clean, generous, and industrious people.... it is their viewpoint on life and how they practice it that makes them a true hippie.

Tye-dye Tee shirts and long hair and a little pot no more make a hippie than cowboy boots, jeans, and a hat make a cowboy.... it's all in lifestyle and attitude.
