Of course someone has to pay for it, and if people live longer past retirement they will have to work longer. It's exactly the same policy, but slightly changed to make up for the fact that life expectancy has gone up. It has nothing to do with not being able to afford it.

That's ridiculous! Of course it has everything to do with not being able to afford it. If there wasn't a problem they wouldn't be raising the retirement age they would just leave it as is and pay everyone but the facts are they are running out of money just like we are to pay all of these pensions.

Oh hia. Let me reitarate. The only reason I am replying in this thread is because of the first few posts which said something along the lines of: America is the greatest, even if it's bad right now there's no where greater, no where else has any freedoms. Now that's pretty damn offensive don't you think?

I agree with you, in the UK and in Germany we have a lot of lardy people, lots of fatties. Who was denying that? I'm not. But it's not to the same extent as the US I believe. I went to an American school in Germany, and perhaps it's just that demographic of Americans, but the children and the wives (not the husbands in the military) were all quite large. Larger than I've generally encountered elsewhere. Now again, this may be the demographic.

Secondly the people I met had a poor understanding of geography. Now I'm absolutely NOT saying that all the Americans I met are stupid. Far from it, I met plenty of SMART americans, but geography was not their forte. Maybe this has to do with the way the news shows countries on a map, or something? But I met: Someone who thought England was a city in France, someone who thought England was a city in Angleland, someone who didn't realise they spoke English in England. To be fair, during my geography lessons at this school we didn't actually learn geography, we learnt "cultural history", which was interesting and relevant and educational in itself, but it aint geography. I've not encountered this lack of geographic knowledge in the other countries I have experience of. But perhaps we're worse at maths?

And yes dentistry sucks in the UK. We all know it does. But the one thing that doesn't matter is having straight white teeth, straight white teeth does not equal healthy teeth, it equals braces and chemicals. No cavities or absecces or receding gums equal healthy teeth. Unfortunately dentists suck at removing wisdom teeth or sorting out receding gums.


Oh and the CCTV cameras: The majority of them are privately owned by shop keepers or home owners. People are allowed to do that right? It's their choice, their freedom.

Couldn't agree with you more about the age on here. I laugh at the anti US comments. As I've said in this thread already, there is plenty wrong with this country, BUT a lot more right. I don't know where the vacation days thing came up. I'm in the US and have got 20 days for years.

As for the rest of you. The UK, the countries (as small as they are) don't get along within the UK. How is the IRA treating you????

I have lived in several countries in Europe for over ten years and many of these facts are misleading.

Take for example Germany, the state determines at an early age...I believe what we would equate to sixth or seventh grade what you will do in life. If your not a bright student at that age it's off to learn a trade which you will do very good at but no choice for college. The bright kids go to gymnasium and off too the university.

Private land in Europe is non-existent for the most part...yes you can own your house and small lot but try and by a 100 acres of land anywhere in Europe...not happening

know this may be difficult for you, but look up on google a map of Europe. You will see that Europe is less than half the size of the US, land is at a premium. You cannot buy something that does not exist - despite what your Federal Reserve may tell you. This would explain why London has more people living in it than many US states.

They never had dictators or warlords as leaders, there governments have never betrayed them or other people in any way shape or form. There perfect and brilliant, attractive and are in top physical form every last one of them. I also heard that Europeans dont make assumptions and generalizations based on the information they get from there media sources..only dumb Americans do that...right?

It hasn't got to do with running out of money. Don't you realise that if a demographic changes you have to make accomodations for that change? If people died at 40 then people could probably retire at twenty, but then people would have to start working at 2. If people are living longer they will have to work longer. This has nothing to do with not being able to afford something. This is an adjustment to keep the books balanced BECAUSE there has been a CHANGE in the demographic. So some people don't like the idea of that. That isn't the same as not being able to afford something

Really the argument is that it is that by CHANGING the retirement age the policy is being KEPT the same by READJUSTING it to the CHANGE that is a LONGER life expectancy.

Well I certainly NEVER said this about America or Americans. All I have done is defend my little European self from the first few ARROGANT posts about America being the ultimate greatest and nowhere else matching it in terms of freedom or the quality of life.

In my opinion, every man who is proud of his country may make the same argument about where they come from. But to answer more specifically, if this country WAS NOT as great as people claim, why do so many risk everything to come here? Other countries have immigration issues as well, but no other place has such an influx of people coming in from all over the world, in hopes of something better. This has been going on since before this country had a name.

You have a huge influx of Mexicans and a comparatively normal flow of people from other countries. If you were a Mexican would you stay in your country with the daily fear of having your head blown off and body mutilated or would you flee to the nearest country you thought was safe?

Here in Australia we have a huge influx of people escaping places like Somalia and other countries and arriving here on boat after sailing the oceans with little food, water and shelter - generally crammed in so tight that they can barely breathe - all for the promise of a better life in Australia. You most certainly don't hear Aussies claiming ours is the greatest country on Earth because they all want to come here!! No, we recognize it's because we are one of the closest safer nations, not because we think we are bloody fantastic.

As I mentioned above, no where else in the world is it more apparent that social class, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation are nothing more but road blocks to success. No where else in the world are you guaranteed success through hard work. If you truly work hard your whole life, you will not fail. Whether its studying, flipping burgers, playing sports.....

There are so many people in this country who were born with literally nothing, and now are some of the most successful people in the world regardless of whether they are black or white, gay or straight, male of female.

Just don't ever get sick or injured or lose your job through no fault of your own. If you do you they will foreclose your home and put you on the streets - after gambling your mortgage away in the derivatives market.

The American Dream is still alive, despite these hard times. Just like the original colonists who risked everything to start this country, nothing is achieved without risk, hard work, courage, and the will to succeed. If anyone ever tried to invade us, they would find groups of people normally at odds with each other feeling the patriotism that only an American knows, banding together and fighting alongside each other. Anyone who has served in the armed forces will attest to the fact that an Alabama farmer and a New York prep will put their differences aside and fight side by side, risking their lives for each other.

I think you will find that most countries people would do the same given a threat to their country or freedom. We Aussies are generally thought of as easy-going fun people - just don't invade us or god help you is all I can say.

This country is also home to many beautiful natural wonders, terrains, animals. Even just a drive up the coast of California will leave you breathless as you witness beautiful beaches, snowy mountains, lush forests, and a melting pot of different cultures.

Nobody is denying the natural beauty of the American continent. Every country on Earth has it's own natural beauty.

I'd say, some one depends on propaganda a little too much! That statement would be like me saying if some one is from England they must have bad teeth and oral hygene, or saying some one is stupid because they are from Poland. It's wrong no matter who does it. I am smart enough to know that stereotypical people will see what ever piece of the big picture, about a different country's population, they want to see. Possibly one that is meant to make the person trash talking another feel a little better about things that make one miserable in one's own world.

Oh no I'm not saying you , But that is apparently the general views people have of my country men. When it comes to defending my government I'll be by your side hurling rocks but my people are another matter. I dont know where people get off saying this is the best country in the world because its not there is no one "best country". Every place on this earth has is pro's and it's cons. I am in no way against Europeans just the arrogant few(as you would have anywhere) who seemingly have no better thing to do then rail against good people day in and day out. To be honest some of the best people in my life are from across the pond including the girl I am engaged to.
