I completely agree. What makes our country great in my opinion is the general willingness to work. Most people who retire, end up sitting around all of a few days before they have to DO something productive. Thats why we have something called the American Dream. This is one of the only countries in the world where hard work almost always guarantees success. Where else can a man be born poor, work his butt off and die wealthy? Not only is this possible, but its almost common place.

Yeah but most loyal Americans won't just abandon this country for a better wage; we're here to make things better for anyone who comes here. America is still the greatest country on Earth, and the OP is just one defector we will not miss

I agree. We work hard so that people who come here (usually illegally) from a horrid place, can have free hospital visits, food, and education. Its a frustrating concept, but we still do it. We are a nation of people who dont mind looking out for others.

Why is America the greatest country on earth anyway?
I find it abit conceited to say that, it's like saying 'I'm the hottest guy on the planet. Everyone wants to be like me and you must love me'

In my opinion, every man who is proud of his country may make the same argument about where they come from. But to answer more specifically, if this country WAS NOT as great as people claim, why do so many risk everything to come here? Other countries have immigration issues as well, but no other place has such an influx of people coming in from all over the world, in hopes of something better. This has been going on since before this country had a name.

As I mentioned above, no where else in the world is it more apparent that social class, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation are nothing more but road blocks to success. No where else in the world are you guaranteed success through hard work. If you truly work hard your whole life, you will not fail. Whether its studying, flipping burgers, playing sports.....

There are so many people in this country who were born with literally nothing, and now are some of the most successful people in the world regardless of whether they are black or white, gay or straight, male of female.

The American Dream is still alive, despite these hard times. Just like the original colonists who risked everything to start this country, nothing is achieved without risk, hard work, courage, and the will to succeed. If anyone ever tried to invade us, they would find groups of people normally at odds with each other feeling the patriotism that only an American knows, banding together and fighting alongside each other. Anyone who has served in the armed forces will attest to the fact that an Alabama farmer and a New York prep will put their differences aside and fight side by side, risking their lives for each other.

This country is also home to many beautiful natural wonders, terrains, animals. Even just a drive up the coast of California will leave you breathless as you witness beautiful beaches, snowy mountains, lush forests, and a melting pot of different cultures.

In my opinion, THAT is what makes this a great place to live. Despite all the anti-american sentiments on ATS, I am proud to be an American, and thankful to be born in this beautiful country.

America is one of the greatest countries? Don't make me laugh

Dumb Things Americans Believe

When the average American believes stuff like this, how can you even think that your country is the best on earth.

A lot of school kids and even adults don't know where things are on a geographical scale

Young Americans Geographically Illiterate

As for being the freest country on earth, you should probably think again

This thread was posted a while ago

20 Signs America Is No Longer Free

The obesity rate is still risings in the US

So now the UK doesnt have any FAT people? From what I understand England has a massive obesity issue. Then there is that whole dental issue that we wont even get into.

No stupid people in the UK either? Wow, it sounds like a swell place. Im sure if you took the average pasty ass, beer swilling rube from the English countryside and gave him a spontaneous geography quiz, that he /she would certainly ace it in every way. It couldnt be that the people making that video in the US were purposefully trying to get the dumbest answers possible. Maybe it was edited, do ya think?

And hey, Americans have lost our freedoms, even though there are 2,000 closed cicuit cameras on the streets of the UK, following and recording your every move? You also pay half of your income in taxes and you cant own a firearm. But hey, keep telling yourself how "free" you are.

Wow, just wow.

How did America end up like this? When I was a kid I used to dream about one day moving to America, even as little as 10 years ago if I had been given the opportunity I would have jumped at the chance at moving there, anywhre would do, as long as it was the good old US of A.

Now ive grown up and opened my eyes a little to what the USA actually has become I wouldnt even want to go there on holidays now.

Tell me guys, what happened? The constitution? the Land of the Free? for gods sake you have 12 days vacation a year and some of you are even so brain washed and placid that you try to defend your masters for treating you like slaves?

I grew up thinking Americans had some guts, like the cowboys they showed us all on TV.

Turns out you guys are so cowardly you have allowed your masters to completely destroy everything that your ancestors fought and died for and most of you are STILL living in a dream world.

Wake up, your masters rule over you. Your the most hated country in the world (even your closest allies hate you) and you think your living in 'The greatest country in the world'?

You have allowed your masters to alienate you and have, unfortunately, bullied your allies into secretly wishing for your downfall.

Sorry to say it like it is but hey, your AMERICANS, you live in THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!

Its talk like that that makes people hate you all, NOT because of jealousy, but because its complete rubbish that may have been true 300 years ago but is a load of crap today!

and to all you americans comparing the USA to the UK. WHEN DO WE MAKE RETARDED POSTS CLAIMING THAT WE ARE THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD??????

I have lived in several countries in Europe for over ten years and many of these facts are misleading.

Take for example Germany, the state determines at an early age...I believe what we would equate to sixth or seventh grade what you will do in life. If your not a bright student at that age it's off to learn a trade which you will do very good at but no choice for college. The bright kids go to gymnasium and off too the university.

Where is the King of Saudi Arabia getting his health care at right now...the U.S. speaks volumes.

Most countries in Europe have a lottery every year, just for the right to apply to immigrate to the U.S. it is full every year without exception, but we require Europeans to bring something to us.

Private land in Europe is non-existent for the most part...yes you can own your house and small lot but try and by a 100 acres of land anywhere in Europe...not happening

People in Europe are very meticulous to the point of anal through there socialistic training in my opinion.

You think paperwork and regulations, car registration, elecricity, etc are a pain in the states ...try it in Europe....

Not to say I don't enjoy Europe, it has many things to offer...but to say we should leave America is just ludicrous...just a few thoughts

In Germany, the state DOES NOT decide who will go to what school. It's the parents, the child and the teachers who "decide". Furthermore, going off to learn a trade doesn't happen until towards the end of an education, giving a child enough time to "decide". And if a child doesn't go to a Gymnasium (but goes to a ""lower"" school like a Realschule) they can switch to a Gymnasium if they wish to study something more ""difficult"" and go on to university.

I don't know, what's that to do with me? Maybe they don't have the funds to leave? And why should someone leave just because they don't like something? Perhaps people should try and change something they don't like?

Are you basically saying to those who don't like it that they should leave? That's completely unhelpful, if you left whenever you didn't like something nothing would change for the better.

Being from America is bad enough?
Let's see...

I can drink my liver out and no one will stop me. (in Islam, drinking is prohibited)
I can smoke.
I can criticize my PRESIDENT and call him names. (in North Korea you are sent to a camp or even executed if you criticize Kim Jong Il...also, when Saddam was president of Iraq, he had bad talkers imprisoned and had their tongues cut out)
I can be gay and not be executed or imprisoned for it. (like they do in Iran)
I can look at porn.
I can go to the strip club.
I can listen to a radio station and not get imprisoned for it (in North Korea, if you are caught listening to South Korean radio, you are sent to a concentration camp)
Women aren't repressed and have the entire Starbucks to hang out at and not just an isolated corner (like they do in Saudi Arabia)

I don't know....I'm pretty goddamn grateful to be American. Don't like it? Get out.

I can do that in the two countries I've lived in too. I could also marry someone from the same gender in Germany or the UK, in fact there'd hardly be mention or a debate about it.

My question to all of you Americans and even the non Americans who are pissing and moaning about freedoms being removed or taken away, let me ask you one question?

What exactly is it that you have a burning desire to do that your freedoms will not allow for? Again, what is it you wish to do so very badly that you have not or are not allowed to do?

Please....I will wait for your responses.

You ever wonder what the world would be like if we had just let Hitler do his thing?

It's depressing that this young generation of know-it-alls seems to conveniently forget the sacrifices that U.S. American men, many still living, made to free most, if not ALL of Western Europe. What a slap in the face to men who lost limbs storming the beaches of France, or men who fought alongside Brits on the mainland to push back what is TRUE TYRANNY AND EVIL. The world is a messed up place, I just love these Europeans who think that they're hands are clean. YOUR GOVERNMENTS ARE IN CAHOOTS WITH THE U.S. GOVERNMENT AT ALL TIMES, even if they publicly denounce something the U.S. does (if they pretend to hate us, they'll probably get elected).

Oh and as for your European universities being "free," you get what you pay for. U.S. universities are leaps and bounds beyond most European universities. Why do so many people come to the U.S. for secondary and advanced education? Oh, that's right, all that tuition pays for better FACILITIES, TECHNOLOGY and FACULTY.

Take your euro-trash garbage and shove it, it's amazing how "ignorant" U.S. Americans are when most of their critics conveniently forget history and/or current diplomacy.

I'm beginning to believe the average age of ATS members is somewhere around 16. Awesome.

That's not true. If you read my post I explained it to you
Of course someone has to pay for it, and if people live longer past retirement they will have to work longer. It's exactly the same policy, but slightly changed to make up for the fact that life expectancy has gone up. It has nothing to do with not being able to afford it.

And on the tuition fees, well that's a long thing to repeat. Read my post for an explanation of how the government hasn't changed how much they are paying for university at all, they are still spending the same, no more no less.

Ive often wondered the same thing.

Actually, why dont all the whiners just shut up and make a difference? If people spent half as much energy actually getting out there and DOING something as they do whining and complaining, this country would be in a much better position.

Everyone loves to criticize, moan and complain about how bad everything is, but no one wants to be the person who actually attempts to make a change. Those that do try to make a difference are also criticized and its one of those damned if you do, damned if you dont sort of situations.

Personally, I wont complain about someone elses nation as a whole. To me, thats just not fair. Being critical of a government is one thing, but even then its hard to fully comprehend if you dont live in the nation

It's what people outside of the US are being conditioned to do. It is now hip and cool to hate America and Americans, in spite of any good deeds done in the past. I dont think the world would be a better place if the Germans had won the war, not at all. But a little bit of grattitude and a slightly longer attention span would be nice.

But it is the cool new trendy thing, to behave like snooty sophisticated Euro trash and to bash anything American, even though their own country is twice as corrupt.....only no longer relevant or in a position of power.

And your point being, this is determined by state sponsored test, administered by employees of the state...and parents get some input, but the haus frau has spent much of life washing the windows on a daily basis, sweeping the side walk and ensuring the blinds are raised and lowered at the appropriate times...So yes the is a miscarriage of a youth's potential to pigeon hole them into a course of life at such an early age. But I guess this is how the Russians used to do so well in the Olympics...

I never once knocked the U.K.'s education system, just per comparison, the U.S. is well ahead of Europe as a whole. I actually took a few courses at UCL when I was in the U.K. for 13 months.

My point being that all this xx vs. xx is bullsquat. EVERY NATION IS CORRUPT TO AN EXTENT. EVERY NATION HAS ITS PROBLEMS. EVERY NATION HAS DONE WRONG.

The sooner people realize these things, the sooner we can all work on creating a more unified and peaceful species.
