Very early photographic images of humans discovered

Wow this picture is amazing because of the fact that these two Human figures look like ghost's. Here is the original picture and then below it is the enhanced picture and below the 2 pictures is the link to the article about them. I just have one question. For someone that knows about imaging and photography why do these 2 figures look transparent?

I believe the transparency has to do with the very long exposure times needed with early photography. I'm assuming a bit here, but they may not even have been in the picture for the entire exposure. They could've walked there while the picture was being taken and then stood there long enough to be "captured" so there's a bit of the background and a bit of them, hence the transparency.
