I’ll start of by saying I’m probably going to get brought to the ground for stating my points on a conspiracy website but any constructive criticism is more than welcome. First off these points are brought by the understanding that America is and has been moving to a socialist state of governing especially under the Bush administration with the Patriot Act which was a major move on individual privacy, the No Child Left Behind Act which was a huge centralization of power from the states to the national government, and under the Obama administration with the Healthcare Bill which according to Nancy Pelosi we’ll just have to wait and see what’s in it.

Now I’m sure most of you are aware of the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 which allows the president to shutdown the internet if he determines it’s a threat to national security. Here is a link to a pdf copy of the bill if you feel so inclined to look into it more cdt.org... This leads me to why I just don’t understand the logic behind what wikileaks is doing and why it has garnered the media attention that it has.

As you all know the original release of war documents from wikileaks this summer got some major attention with MSM which I find unusual since it would seem that if the American government didn’t want those war documents to gain world wide attention they would have stopped MSM from reporting on it but instead they were sounding the alarm right along with MSM as if they wanted everyone to know. As you all know General Petreous along with others were very adimant about it being a threat to national security because it released secrets. What secrets? All in a nut shell it said that we were loosing the war which really isn’t a surprise since we learned in Vietnam that you can’t win a war against terrorists. So were there really any major secrets to threaten national security? I don’t believe there were.

Now we have wikileaks releasing this next batch of war documents and the media hype is already through the roof …

The internet is the last source of information we have and I can personally say I would’nt know a quarter of what I know know without the internet. If they did want to limit the information we have the internet would be bullseye for that target and wikileaks is playing right into getting it shutdown due to it being a breach in national security. They may even garner some support from honest patriotic Americans who have been told that if it isn’t shutdown it will simply jeopardize the lives of our troops.

The idea is very closely linked to this ATS thread…

Well if and when they do shut it down not much we are gonna be able to do about it. It's not like they are gonna take a poll and see who's in favor of it. Come to think of it how many times do they actually listen to the general public? You have a valid point but think our hands are tied in this matter. Look at the bright side though then we can all go back to being ignorant sheep and wash our hands of any of this mess.

It is a valid fear if you ask me. I hope that if that power move was actually carried out, that the majority will draw their line in the sand and say enough. I fear however, that most people would go about their business though, as long as there is TV to keep them occupied, anything short of losing their job, or being rounded up into some death camp would not even catch the normal person's attention.

If they shut down the internet think of the outcome it will have on companies that use the internet to receive files from other companies. I know my company constantly do this as my job is to monitor this. If this happened to my company, it would grind to halt within hours. Needless to say the world would grind to halt!

I see this as somewhat of a concern - there goes the power grids, business transactions and well we know how much is dependant on the internet. I think their first line of defense will be to feed the people propoganda big time. I have already seen little tidbits of that on CNN. The kill switch would be a last resort - I hope. With that said I do believe this warrants discussion.

its impossible to shut down the internet

I suggest everyone that wants to write theories about the internet to research how the internet works

I guess I didn't make myself clear on that. I'm not suggesting the possibility of shutting down the entire internet just a strict limitation of it. On the other hand the point I'm trying to make is not what they will do to the internet since it's very hard to know the exact capabilities they have but what is going to set it off. Also I'm not trying to create theories I'm simply trying to get some input from others on the possible outcome of what wikileaks is doing.

I think you're on to something, and I've been looking at wikileaks in regards to an internet kill switch type of law.

I think the main problem with their plan is this...

The Military Industrial Complex has overestimated their "Salute the troops but not the war" rhetoric. It's not as powerful as they imagined it is. They're not getting the support of the people on this one. More people support the whistleblower than the regime. It appears as though we'll live to fight another day, but we'll see. Depending on how many strings the powers that be are pulling, they may be able to turn this around.
