POLITICS: Pakistani Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali Resigns

Zafarullah Khan Jamali, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, submitted his resignation Saturday and dissolved the country's Cabinet. The move comes following months of rumored dischord between Jamali and President Gen. Pervez Musharraf. Jamali, however, did not hold much power in the government, and word is that his presence will not be missed by many.



Party chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain was nominated to stand in as acting Prime Minister by Jamali. He has indicated that Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz will be named as Prime Minister after being elected to the National Assembly.

Report: Pakistani Prime Minister Quits
Officials said the ruling party had called a special meeting for later in the day, and one source inside the prime minister's office told AP that Jamali was expected to resign then.

``Just wait and see,'' Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said of the report on privately-owned ARY television. He would not elaborate.

I hope this is not confirmed.. a power vaccume in this nation of Muslims could lead to a new ledership of moderate or radical Muslims. and then we'd have a Pakistan under the rule of Muslims with nuclear weapons.

Some have predicted that exact event. If Pakistan were a true democracy you could imagine the results from a nation with over 80% of it's population being Muslim. despite the warm relations between the current leadership in Pakistan and the U.S.A. there is a great deal of anti-American feeling expressed through the Pakistani people.

I'm including plenty of wikipedia links on pakistani government so that you can check this out more quickly than i did. My impression is that with Hussain being knocked off and now Jamali resigning, it looks like someone in the minor factions of the PML is trying to reduce the influence of the PML (Q) people. On the other hand, a strengthened PML might not like a weasel like Jamali in a strong office. Jamali has consistently found his way into every ruling party in Pakistan, since the beginning of his career as a socialist.
Furthermore, if his orignal political affiliation indicates his heart, he may be more fiercely anti-india than his ever-shifting moderate facade would suggest. Such a possibility, or even a perception, would make him a hinderance to Pervez Musharraf's attempts to build stability and gain a non-agression pact with India.
Last but not least, the prime minister of Pakistan serves at the pleasure of the chief executive (General Musharraf). He has little if any power on his own. In most ways, the chief executive is the head of a totalitarian democracy in the current Pakistani government, although it has been loosening swiftly since 2002. The prime minister simply can't do much, and his ineffectiveness despite his dissent on some issues would have made him very unpopular. This means that the chief executive could be considered to be excercising very shrewd judgement if he forced this resignation to avoid the impression that he is supporting a puppet in the prime minister's office.

There are many explanations, few of them revolutionary. It is ignorant to suggest that nuclear escalation is likely because of this. It is important to RESEARCH these issues before accepting the stereotype of a radical muslim nation that would nuke the whole world if any Muslim ever held power. The FACT is that Pakistan is generally pro US. Pakistanis support a ruler who owns dogs, studied at a Christian university, and who turned on the Taliban to support the US. Pakistan's nukes are for defense against India. Pakistan is not publically accused by any nation or intelligence service to my knowledge of proliferation. It was found to be the lone action of military officers who were arrested for their crimes. Pakistan has offered India a non-agression-pact and is making efforts in good faith to end the fighting in Kashmir. But you know... it all could be a facade. Now that this prime minister, who once belonged to a party that called for a "1000 year war on India" has resigned... it's only a matter of time until pakistan goes over the brink. Surely the sky is falling even as we speak- take cover. (if I didn't plan on talking to my ex later tonight I'd dish out just a little bit more of my sarcasm, but I think I better save some.)
