Father and son film outer space, do-it-yourself style

green.yahoo.com

The duo housed the video camera, iPhone, and GPS equipment in a specially designed insulated casing, along with some hand-warmers and a note from Max requesting its safe return from whomever may find it after making it back to solid ground. All told, father and son spent eight months preparing for their homemade journey into space, in hopes of filming "the blackness beyond our earth."

Then, one day in August, Max, his father, and his friend Miles Horner headed out to a nearby park to see their dreams realized. After attaching their equipment to a 19-inch weather balloon and switching on t

This is amazing! This is what true freedom is all about. Being able to launch your own project into the sky without needing to get permission from big brother. To be honest, the song 99 Red Balloons came to mind when I read this article and watched the video. This is very interesting. I am glad I took the time to read it and watch the video.

It also warms my heart to see a father and son working together and accomplishing something amazing like this. There is an amazing video within the article. I highly recommend watching it if you are interested in this kind of thing!

Wow, thanks for posting this. What a great experiment! They should do a second round, but this time put the equipment in a model rocket to be launched at 90K - 100K ft. That would be most kewl.

A thread of the same topic can be in both the Breaking Alternative News section and another section.

I saw this video last night. It's pretty awesome to see how high up it gets with such basic equipment that the average person has access to.

It was also cool to see it falling after the balloon popped.

I'd like to try this experiment someday.

Hmm, didn't look at the date. I looked at the time and assumed it was the same date. Oh well.

I was the first to post it to break alternative news, so both are still legit.

No probs,
What they did was an interesting innovation, there must be hundreds of ways of achieving things in a simpler fashion, a bit like the youngster who modified a Bazooka to save lives ar sea..... it shoots out lifeboats!

Deadly weapons saving lives for once... I hope it catches on

At least he didn't say his son was in the balloon, and have the national guard chasing it.

Hi 27,
He didn't say he wasn't
a nice bit of levity for a change!

Wow...
I can't describe the feeling I had watching this video...
I felt like I finally had an honest, real person look at the atmosphere
and beginnings of outer space...
I grinned like a fool the whole time watching it.
What a lucky kid to have a father to take the time,
initiative, and patience to do this with him.
Thanks for the find!

Thank you so much for posting this!

I am taking a history of physics class right now, and all I keep reading about is how all the past great minds experimented on their own, perhaps with some funding of course, but needless to say....

This Father and Son have brought back that ancient sense of experiment on your own and learn. Truly Remarkable. Admire their passion, optimism, and enthusiasm.

my friend was telling me about this at work the other day.

I thought it was fantastic what human ingenuity can do for us if we just follow through. There are so many things we don't have to take at face value because we are capable of doing stuff like this!

Now I just need to get off my ruckus and follow suit.
