If there is a catastrophe how do they grantee the key holders survive.

That's why there is probably a backup set in the basement of Skull and Bones. They call them "the skeleton keys." (I know, I know, that was awful...sorry)

The first thought that I had when i saw this was pretty much that.
What if one dies, 3 can't make it to the U.S and the other is robbed during the catastrophe?
I don't think this was well thought out IF they really do want to kick start the internet.
I personally would've scattered the 7 keys around America seeing as that is the main contact point. At least then there is more a chance of all of the keys holders being able to make it.
However, as it stands, it looks like the keys were scattered around the world to make sure the internet isn't switched back on if you ask me.
But maybe that's just way too over the top?

That was my thought exactly.

With all the latest news about shutting down the internet, there are some interesting rumors floating around.

As you well know the internet informs the masses, the masses have access to more knowledge, at their fingertips and at high speed across the world the "word" gets out,

Shut it down or filter it, they want to control what information we can access.

One last thing , doesn't it make you wonder what catastrophic event they will manufacture or that may be in the works so Obama can implement his power to shut down the internet for four months,

My son says it is impossible to shut down the internet.

Is it?

No, I'm not in a place where I can access it right now...I'll see what I can do about that later. I did read the text at the link.

Why?

I think we need to throw a little romance into this story.

There will always be ways around this. they can shut down the bulk of it that the general non tech savvy people wouldn't be able to get around but they can't shut it down completely and there will be "mini" internets popping up.

Time to get a reality check on this.

Its a key to restart the secure domain name system, that is currently not even widely adopted yet.

If there was a catastrophe the DNS system we have used for the last X years would still work, DNSSEC could also still work, just you would no be able to verify the trust of the server.

Public key cryptography and certificates work on a chain of trust, and the top key is really important so they cut it into a few bits and spread it out.

The press have yet again got this all wrong and made it wound wayyy more important than it is.

The correct title shoulf of been 'The Keys to the verification of domain name lookups in the new DNSSEC system'.

That's a great point. How do they get a hold of them if everything falls apart? :p

Thanks. I was wondering about that.

Because it seemed a little silly that the press was writing that this "restarts the Internet" ... but then reported that this is part of a security feature for some newer DNS system.

Looked like quite a bit of hand-waving.

This is highly fascinating but we mustnt forget those who hold the keys to electricity.

IDK.....maybe Ellen DeGeneris can help?

(go to 1:00)

I think the 'Professor' from "Gilligan's Island" once built a similar contraption (out of coconuts?) for Gilligan to pedal....

OK, thanks for explaining that, I don't get the point of the keys now.

Someone want to help me with that?

They want to fix it so that when ...someone...decides to shut down the internet that it is almost impossible to turn it back on. If the story is true, and if they wanted to protect the internet, each keyholder could turn it back on all by himself, not hope that 71% of the keyholders survive THE EVENT and manage to cross the 7 seas to get to one central place where they can all plug in their magic cards at the same time.

Stormy, this is fascinating to be sure. But leave it to my mind to leave the tracks. This is simple, it's Texas Hold-em! Everybody gets 7 cards but uses only 5 to construct their best hand. It's online poker.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Stormy, even the story itself might be a "fishing" expedition, it's impossible to tell. But the list of places and the 5 of 7 seems so strained as to throw cold water on this. And someone mentioned why not make it possible for a single card to to do this? It makes one wonder if they trust all the people they are entrusting. If they could restart the Internet, why would they tell everybody they can? Wouldn't this be an ace in the hole? You wouldn't want to divulge your fail-safe as someone could then plan on taking out 3 of the 7 cards/keys. Perhaps 1 card will restart it and they are attempting to insure that all of the card holders will work toward using their cards. Perhaps there are more than 7 cards, there is likely more than we are allowed to know.

Or is this information being released because they don't have a way to restart it? Is this a bluff? (Damn, back at Texas Hold-em!
) At best a restart could take some time and we can only imagine the damage occurring in the interim as so much is now Internet dependent.

Based on what I know on this the 7 Keys is the Main Set with a spare sitting complete are both in The USA in a secure location with an automatic activation protocol of a second set of 7 who reside in The US and are here now and who are strictly classified as to identity, location as this will only become nessecary in the exclusive event the intial 7 cannot make it or are comprimised during transit. Those "In The Know" are under penalty of death if either they babble or leak a thing. The 7 travel to the locale with an armed guard whose fully authourized to shoot first and ask questions later as thier sole purpose is to get the person to the point safely and unharmed. They get a police escort to the airport a fighter jet escort while in the air and another armed police escort from the airport to the spot.

If one of the 7 is unable to make it or in the event 5 is unable to attend a secondary activation protocol does exist, ie they don't have to fly anywhere and can do it from where they are at using a biometric identification system that has more lockdowns on its firewall then Ft. Knox, The Pentagon, NSA and The White House combined. Think on the level of firewall similar to that of either Air Force One, The Presidential Motorcade, Marine 1 along with Obama and Biden's blackberry's.

The location of the system and key room sits far away from any major population centre and in a place you wouldn't think a facility like that can be.
