NEW ORLEANS – BP made a series of money-saving shortcuts and blunders that dramatically increased the danger of a destructive oil spill in a well that an engineer ominously described as a "nightmare" just six days before the blowout, according to documents released Monday that provide new insight into the causes of the disaster.

I think in light of the other accidents BP has had, the reported conditions of the Atlantis rig this should hopefully open up criminal prosecution of those responsible. They will already be fined $4000 per gallon, and there are sure to be other fines when and if things ever get cleaned up.

But at some point fines and holding the company itself responsible don't do enough. And the people that allow these corners to be cut need to be held financially and criminally liable.
