This is an amazing article. I lived in Las Vegas for 10 years and I never heard of homeless people living in these tunnels. This almost seems like something from out of the movies... (Like Demolition Man, Matrix, Descent...)

Seems like there is even more of a separation of classes... and one of them is going underground. Over a long period of time I'm wondering if whole civilizations could start up underground and you start seeing a sort of mutation/evolution where people are more light sensitive... light colored skin... or other things you see where life forms go underground where this is no light.

LAS VEGAS – Underneath its glitzy casinos, far from the bright marquees, there is another Las Vegas, a pitch-black, dank underworld virtually unknown and unseen by those who live, work and play above.

About 300 people — mostly men battling demons of various addictions — live in the underground storm system built to protect the desert playground from the infrequent cloudburst.

There's no sign or word of welcome down here. Drug use is nearly universal. Most people carry makeshift weapons and the police don't often come unless they're called.

But the denizens have found a haven in the labyrinth of concrete tunnels that snake beneath the city and its suburbs.

That sounds highly dangerous, especially when rain comes. It does look like there is more and more separation going on. Im suprised the article said that everyone just kept to themselves and didnt really bother eachother. I would at first think they would be pretty violent down there but guess not.

Kind of reminds me of a game I played long ago, "Deus Ex", except the underground was in NY and another part was in the catacombs in France.

I was homeless in Vegas and I don't really understand the concept...the weather is nice in Vegas, you don't hardly ever need shelter, and then if you are sheltering in the tunnels, the rain makes it unsafe + you get swept away...Maybe the cops roust you more nowadays than they did when I was homeless there (1987-1988)...at that time there were plenty of easy places to hang and I never had any trouble whatsoever, aboveground...I knew no tunnel-dwellers...
