White House Among Targets Of Cyber Attack

Officials: North Korea Suspected In Attack

WASHINGTON -- The powerful attack that overwhelmed computers at U.S. and South Korean government agencies for days was even broader than initially realized, also targeting the White House, the Pentagon and the New York Stock Exchange.

Other targets of the attack included the National Security Agency, the Homeland Security Department, the State Department, the Nasdaq stock market and The Washington Post, according to an early analysis of the malicious software used in the attacks. Many of the organizations appeared to successfully blunt the sustained computer assaults.

Now this is scary. At least when North Korea shoots off SCUD missiles, we have something tangible to target. But when terrorists aim for something as ethereal as cyberspace, it's going to be a lot tougher to circumvent.

While this time it appears no real harm was done (other than temporarily bringing down some publicly available websites), what will happen when they are able to breach the firewalls and access really critical data?

In my opinion, these nameless, faceless, invisible cyber-terrorists are more of a potential threat than your typical gun-toting Al-Qaeda

(Sorry if this was already posted, but an ATS search of "North Korea" and "Cyber Attack" turned up nothing.)
