Russia announces rearmament plan

news.bbc.co.uk

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said Moscow will begin a comprehensive military rearmament from 2011.

Mr Medvedev said the primary task would be to "increase the combat readiness of [Russia's] forces, first of all our strategic nuclear forces".

Explaining the move, he cited concerns over Nato expansion near Russia's borders and regional conflicts.

Last year, the Kremlin set out plans to increase spending on Russia's armed forces over the next two years.

Scary words indeed.

If Russia goes ahead with this, it could signal the beginning of a new cold war.

Given the Russian concerns over the proposed missile shield, and continued NATO expansion, it would seem that they have a point.

This news comes after Russia was reported to be considering basing bombers in Cuba and is probably their response to a missile shield.

hmmm.
what to say to this?
I guess I dont have the words.
blahski.
I guess Russia is laughing at us, or more like laughing at Obama after he wanted that whole "kill the nukes" deal. No suprise, many people are laughing at him.
Thats all I have.
Just remember, when they say it is for one thing, its usually for something else.

Good news indeed , Russia must rearm itself , it is overdue .

hopefully , Russia begins construction of orbital petawatt/zetawatt class EMP weaponry and China finances it , this will enable Russia to negate any american nuclear assualt or retaliatory strike

USa will attempt to follow suit by spending trillions more and with USA economy in chaos , USa will collapse and fall into civil war . that would be good for Russia as it could capture several american territories and share them with China as payment for financing and Chinese credit given to USA , without threat of any renegade american nuclear strike

I guess you are entitled to your opinion, eventhough in one of your last posts I just read and left a comment on you said the US should be destroyed. Hey thats whatever, but you should remember that wishing the worst on your enemies only comes back to hurt you the most(and your people). So be careful of what you wish for =)

Russia has every right to do this but it wont solve anything. Until the day the people of the world stand up and unite instead of hate each other war will always be an outcome to disagreements.

Dude every thread I have seen you on. you are always bashing America. Do you like hate the US or something? You do realize that the nations of the world are together right? You do realize that by just viewing how the worlds economies are so interlocked you can see this right? Man you seriously need help. The US is corrupt and so is China and Russia so do you really think the world would be safer? Also starting another arms race wouldn't be good so instead of putting your hate before the safety of the planet go learn. As for our culture? The united states is made up of a mixture of cultures from all over the world but then again with your bashing of America I wouldn't expect you to know this either. Dude you need to go learn and see for yourself. See that the United States has been funded via the central bank out of England since the world wars. Maybe even check up on the fact that Russia to was funded by the central banks during world war 2? There isn't a such thing of a government that rules but only a government that follows orders and as we can all see its not by the people. You really need help because what more dangeres then America is people like you. People in your state of mind.

Mods I do not mean to troll nor bash this gentleman but to simple state that to bash one race, one nation, is simply a sign of complete brainwashed obediance so forgive me if my post seems harsh, I wont be replying again. Thank you.

The rest of the civilized world should also be allowed to have the same things that the US does. If we want a truly democratic world, we can't have one country holding the whip. No one can really blame Russia for wanting those things unless they're being a bit hypocritical.

Personally, I'd prefer that no country had the weapons but it's too late for that. The true enemy, The Military Industrial Complex has everyone duped. They're the only winner in an arms race and the losers are common people.

Russia just announced that of 200 MiG-29s that were grounded, due to an in flight breakup last year, 90 are still grounded, with corrosion in the tail section. Many of those that are grounded only have about 150 flying hours on them. That's not a good sign for other operators of the Fulcrum, and several others are starting to have internal talks about what they're going to do.

Sad Child, you make me sad...and I'm usually tickled. You don't even seem to realize that the crazed zealousness you show for Russia is the exact same thing as the blind patriotism that makes you hate the u.S.A and it's people. Grow up man. Or rather, don't. I don't want a hateful and spiteful SOB like you to be in your countries government.

As for Russia, this is all par for the course. They have to rattle this saber now that their in a little bit better position than us. I don't blame them. But I damn sure don't condone it. Now is not the time for anyone to start an arms race. Jesus, didn't we get close enough to annihilation last time? The only way that I can see for us to get out of it, is to scrap the missile shield program and withdraw all troops out of foreign lands. Get back to the Constitution. We don't need to be out and about. Lets fix ourselves instead of trying to beat the world.

Marvelous!
If that happens then the USA would go exactly the way of the Soviet Union when it attempted to match the Star Wars shield. Oh, how the tables would turn.

Oh, and Russia is a wholesome and wonderful place right? Have you heard about the deadly Russian Mafia. What about the huge human trafficking arrangement. Oh, I know, how about the growing drug issues over there!

People are people and cultures all have their own problems so you are right, lets just kill everyone, that will certainly wipe out corruption. Very enlightened.

Thank God Russia is getting back on its feet and hopefully more powerful than ever. We can go back to fearing the Russians and end this nonsense with the terrorists BS. Besides, I miss those girls of the USSR calendars.

Periodic military rearmament is an integral part of armed forces and defense of every developed country - irregardless of whether there is a Cold War or any threat of war. Armed forces are maintained by countries for a reason, and rearmaments are done for a reason as well. If you are to claim that a rearmament for a large country like Russia is not needed, then you might as well say a country doesn't need an army.

Everyone knows that the US is on the forefront of military development and build up - yes even today 18 years after the end of the Cold War. Even in the absense of the Cold War, the other countries are practicaly forced to also develop and modernize their military. The US is the leading force in the new era of global militarization (5th generation fighters, UAV technology, new carriers, etc.), and it is the reason why countries like China, Iran, India, and Russia among others are also increasing focus on military spending.

It is simply not an option for Russia to sit back and watch as the US becomes a military hyperpower - because this may lead to US completely dominating in other spheres such as global politics.

Russia needs this rearmament program. The military of the country is seriously aged in is in desperate need of major upgrading. This program will also pump tens of billions of dollars into the Russian economy for contracts. Also hopefully the living conditions in the military will become better and safer. As for US and others - this is not a big concern. With Obama in power in the US, relations between the two countries will hopefully improve.

Scary words indeed.

Want scary - try taking a look at the annual spending of the US military forces from a perspective of outside countries. A country with less than 10% of the world's population, has military spending of over 50% of the world total.

Who said a rearmament would lead to a Cold War? The Cold War started primarily because of ideological differences and attempts to spread differing ideologies (communism and capitalism) around the world to developing countries. Such a key difference does not exist between Russia and the US today - both are capitalist powers.

Second - even if there is something resembling a Cold War in the future, it will no doubt involve more than 2 parties. Whether Russia rearms or not, China is bound to become a superpower in the coming decades, and possibly India. Their military power is also growing.

So there will likely be a multipolar world, which is not that bad considering the negatives effects of the US hegemony of the past 2 decades.

Even if you disregard what is going on with NATO and the ABM issue - Russia still desperately needs to modernize its military. It is seriously aged, and needs to be on par with military technology of other large countries.

This another reason for the proposed rearmament program. You have to remember that these Mig-29's are about 20 years old now. Russia does not have as intensive and developed upgrade and maintenance program as the US does. So most of the described problems (like corrosion) are not due to design shortcomings but improper maintenance. If this is improved, the Mig-29 can be kept in a much better shape and have their service life extended.

Look for example at the Tu-95 bombers. Russia has a very thorough maintenance program for these planes, and as the result they continue to be highly reliable and widely utilized even 40 years after their development. Russia needs to do the same for the rest of the airforce fleet. And the navy is facing a similar problem on an even more massive scale.

I personally think that its too late at this point to think about a massive rearmament plan given the fact that the economy is falling and far below par.

Last year, the Kremlin set out plans to increase spending on Russia's armed forces over the next two years.

So what does that mean?!?!?
That they are going to catch up to speed with the U.S. technology within two years!!!
Doesn't make sence to me. I mean I know you have to start some where but now is the worst time to be thinking about becoming a superpower again.
Russia is still a force to be rekoned with not because of their army capabilities but because of geology
