Google search finds seafaring solution

technology.timesonline.co.uk

Google may take its battle for global domination to the high seas with the launch of its own “computer navy”.

The company is considering deploying the supercomputers necessary to operate its internet search engines on barges anchored up to seven miles (11km) offshore.

Google is leading the way to lost privacy, lost control of your life.

And we use it every day.

Forget NWO and all that other paranoid crap.

That is a freakin awesome idea. Park a barge out in international waters and then serve up anything you want, since there is no since law to govern in International Waters. Park Google and PirateBay out there and let the internet revolution begin.

I was hoping this would have a thread. I just hope there aren't 20 other threads started on this topic.

I read the article with great interest. There are a couple of problems to overcome but the basic engineering has been done with other industries. I'd think they would come up with more of an oil platform idea when all is said and done.

Main reason is for 2 way satellite communication. Easy to receive, hard to uplink on a moving or floating object. Need a fairly steady platform to maintain communications.

But here the real kicker. If this is outside territorial water, what about copyright laws? Pirate Bay tried this but no one would sell them an island as I recall. A very substantial case could be made that copyright issues are held only between countries and territories in treaties. A stand alone individual may have immunity in this if the source is outside the jurisdiction of the person or company claiming a copyright infringement.

Google has deep pockets to fight cases like this and they may see some money in movie and music industry that these industries are slow to step into.

This also opens the doorway to privacy issues that are no longer held valid within the laws of different countries. They could collect everything they want and no one could do anything about it.

Just some thoughts....

This sounds like a story i read about a few years ago. There was an off-shore radar instalation that was shut down located in the North Sea in international waters(i think).

Some sort of company bought the platform with the intent of filling this place with servers to hold information that their clients wanted to keep from any type of scrutiny.

I don't remember exactly they story but there was some huge legal issue with doing this. I think they were blocked from doing this.

Just curious, but do salt water and electronics mix?

People, people...the reason Google are doing this is becasue they want to save money on electricity and go green. In 2007, Google put in a patent application for an wave-powered server farm.

Read about it here

So it's not to breach copyright laws etc, etc....

BTW, Google is actually the biggest investor of geothermal power technology in the world, so they are very serious about going green...god bless them hey

Sorry about that WNL...I think my off-hand remarks steered the thread off-topic. I did read the article and found it intriguing, but difficult to imagine.
Barges are heavy and heavy duty, but they also float, which leaves them at the mercy of the seas. If they tether them to the ocean floor, they may as well just put them on a platform and be done with it. They could always create the wave energy device to power them from below. They would still gain the affects of the cooler ocean air temps as well.

If they really wanted to get ingenius, they should come up with a way to attach them to the ocean floor. A high-pressure, submersable habitat tethered to a series of detachable bouys floating atop the ocean surface generating electricity for them. Drain the energy back down the cables and into collectors. For that matter, they could also add solar collectors on rigid stilts to offset any power issues or damage to the wave energy bouys. Back that all up by tapping into one of the many energy conduits that run along the ocean floor and you have yourself an underwater server farm.

FYI...that was my serious reply. Sorry about the first derailment.

Perhaps the servers have become conscious. They want to surf, in person. On real water.

Something like Colossus and the Crab.

International waters start at 12 miles for the US not 7 miles so all you child porn hopefuls will have to find someplace else to find your filth.
