As part of a Senate housing bill, top tax writers are proposing a new requirement for credit-card processors to provide information about businesses' credit-card sales to the IRS. They say the additional information would reduce underreporting of income by businesses by providing the IRS with an additional source of information. It also would allow the government to identify possible cases of underreporting when determining who to audit.
