Petrol rationing planned if drivers' strike continues

Striking tanker drivers have threatened to call another four-day stoppage next week if no agreement is reached in the pay dispute that has threatened fuel supplies across the country.

The move comes as the Government instructed police forces to break up any picket lines that threatened to prevent tankers from leaving or entering fuel depots.

Emergency powers to order petrol rationing will come into force on Monday if the strike threatens to grow out of control. Any mass show of secondary picketing at refineries and distribution depots this weekend will disrupt plans by the industry to keep petrol flowing at the pumps. Fuel shortages will also be inevitable if farmers and hauliers join illicit protests.

I sometimes get the impression that, with all the unrest and protests, the UK might be descending back into the 1970s in many respects with unelected trouble-makers forcing the government's hand. In the local news in my area, for instance, environmental campaigners have hijacked a train delivering coal to a power station and have begun to shovel the coal out of the train.

This kind of thing is happening all over Europe, and elsewhere.

Petrol rationing hasn't been considered in the UK since the '70s, and some may remember (or at least have heard of) the Three Day Week where power to schools, factories, offices etc. was limited to three days each week due to shortages in coal owing to miners on strike.

That might be a slight overreaction. In the article I posted it says "The Times has learnt that Army personnel are not on standby to assist in a fuel crisis and have not been trained to load and unload the latest generation of fuel tankers."

So, thus far, the Army isn't being involved. Personally, though, I'd be secretly preparing them to operate the tankers...

Has nothing to do with liberty and more to do with keeping the UK industrial based economy/society moving. Would you be pissed at the tanker drivers?

Why are they protesting?

If its viable then i dont know.. If its cause of prices then i would be with them..

I dont think bringing military in wit this cause then they might show up at your local mall.

It's about wages.

There are still protests about the price of fuel, though. This isn't helping at all, obviously...

This is just the beginning. Have you heard of the carbon cards? That is RATIONNING on EVERYTHING. Not only fuel, everything. And eco-nazis like those people will walk around the country and give fines and put people in jail to anyone ``destroying the earth``.
