Manhunt after Sherrif's deputy shot

www.foxnews.com

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — A Broward County Sheriff's deputy was shot and critically wounded Wednesday by a robbery defendant he was transporting to court for trial, officials said.

The suspect, Michael Mazza, left the deputy on the side of the road and then escaped in the department van with the deputy's weapon, officials said.

The van was recovered in Ft. Lauderdale, police are still searching for the suspect.

Mazza, 40, was alone in the van with the deputy, who was transporting him to court for his trial on charges of bank robbery and eluding police.

Listening to news networks at the moment, this appears to be a huge manhunt. All of the schools in that county, over 200 are in lockdown.

Fox just reported that choppers were flying about with "SWAT-like" officers hanging out of the side, they could be seen to be carrying weapons, however the choppers were marked "Homeland Security".

Lets hope they find this guy soon, the spokesman from the police dept said that he hoped the public could help bring this guy to justice by any means possible.

To me that was a pretty stupid thing to say. This guy is armed, serving two life sentences and has just shot a deputy. Do you think he won't shoot anyone who gets in his way?

Also, the HS choppers, do they lead investigations like this or are they just helping out?

Any opinions?

I hope they catch this guy quickly. Either taken down with a big ole shotgun, or knocked out and add another charge to his list. What Scum!
Your title is a bit confusing
I thought a Sheriff did something wrong o_O

Crime Gone Crazy in South Florida; Another Cop Shot

It is crazy, I have errands to run and I'm stuck in my house because the police activity is spread out all over the county, 10 minutes to my south and 20 minutes to my north. This suspect is on the loose in white altima and he could be anywhere...

i'm also rather concerned with the school lockdown, my youngest is on a field trip today so I don't know how this playout, school ends for some at 2pm so hopefully the lockdown is over before that.

The news has just reported that this deputy is now dead. My thoughts are with his family.

I have to add though, they are reporting that the deputy or "transit officer" was 76 years old.

I am by no means ageist, but does anyone else think it is a little careless to let a 76 year old escort a 40 year old violent armed robber on thier own?

I find myself scratching my head on that one. :shk:

Further details coming in, there are apparently 260,000 kids in those locked down schools.

The police spokesman just said that they are locked in thier classrooms and would remain there until this issue was resolved.

Thats over a quarter of a million kids locked up for who knows how long. I can see the safety reason, but if they have no idea where this guy is, then why not safely begin shipping these kids back to the safety of thier homes?

Also, is it just me who hates the word "lockdown" being used so freely in schools these days? It's a term that most would associate with prison.

Then again, when you see the way the authorities deal with public incidents, theres not a lot of difference.

Call me a conspiracy theorist........but each time they deal with an incident like this, some of the responses just feel like practice for the bigger picture.

well I just went out in my immediate neighborhood to get some stuff done and traffic is fairly quiet for this time of the day...seems people are staying put at wherever they are at.. Every 5 minutes or so you see a cop car, lights only flashing driving around..

latest word is that suspect is now in custody...just broke.
