American workers stay longer in the office, at the factory or on the farm than their counterparts in Europe and most other rich nations, and they produce more per person over the year.

They also get more done per hour than everyone but the Norwegians, according to a U.N. report released Monday, which said the United States "leads the world in labor productivity."

Hows this for the fat lazy Americans? I have also heard that we have less vacation time per year then most nations in the world. Is it true that in France workers get like a month of paid vacation time per year?

This quote is from the same report (based on 2006 figures ) -

The average U.S. worker produces $63,885 of wealth per year, more than their counterparts in all other countries, the International Labor Organization said in its report

I got the following quote from the US Social Security Administration site -

The national average wage index for 2005 is 36,952.94

Doesn't it give you a warm fuzzy glow knowing that 'the average US worker', just like the rest of us, is making so much money for the men in the boardrooms.

Ehh I still think they should be evicted from NYC ... they are even exempt from parking tickets!

I read somewhere that the UN owes the City of New York millions of dollars in unpaid parking tickets. It would be very funny to see NYC Sheriff's deputies evicting Ban Kee Moon and putting all their stuff to the curb

Damn, a buddy of mine in England gets 2 months or something. He comes stateside every year for 3 months. He said he simply saves his money, plus the exchange rate from the pound to the dollar is very favorable. Something like 1 pound= 2 dollars US. Crazy, no wonder everyone else in the world can afford international travel to the US. I'd have to save $5000 just to have 2500 pounds when I got to the UK. I wish we had a favorable exchange rate for traveling to Europe, I'd probly go every summer.

Well, if you don't make a profit for them, why would they keep a job for you?

In the US, anyone can own stock. There's no age limit or anything. And with the advent of online banking, several sites will let you buy fractional shares, in case you are so poor that you cannot affort that first share of google. So, the "bullies up in the boardroom" often includes the workers themselves. The smarter ones, anyway.

America has always been the most productive country in the world. Look at our agriculture. Part of the problem we have is that we over produce. This is not a very big revelation in my opinion.

Preach it!

We are a prosperous nation BECAUSE of capitalism, even if we are moving slowly into more of a socialist system.

It is no wonder that in the cradle to grave nanny states they are less productive. I wouldn’t want to work as much if they were taking 60 - 70% for the government and I could just mooch off everyone else.

We work more because our government takes less and everyone who wants a job has a job, because of those evil men in the board rooms.

The legal minimum in the UK is 4 weeks paid leave annually. I think the typical is 25 days. This does not include bank holidays.

I get 33 days paid leave and c. 10 days bank holidays. I am glad to be less productive than my US colleagues. I have holidays!

My brother got seconded to the States but retained his benefits package and had twice as much leave than his fellow workmates. They were not chuffed. He was less productive than them!

Ho hum

Wow.

I havnt taken a vacation since 2004 when I got back from the Iraq, and even then I only got 2 weeks!

Truth is I get bored with more than 3 days off, and even just getting back from war I wanted to go back to work after a week.

Thats what we do here, we work so that we dont have to ask the IRS to steal even more on our behalf.

Preach it!

The whole problem with socialism is that it appeals to the "angels of our better nature." Capitalism thrives by knowing it's our baser instincts that make most of the decisions.

Greed may not be good, but enlightened self-interest is the best policeman at the end of the day.

And the only cop you can really trust.

I worked for an Aussie company in the US. After about 6 months I noticed they would go home for about a month or so at a time. Then I was told they got 30 days a year from day one!! So vacation time came for me and I put in for 30 days and was denied because it was my first year and would have to put in 6 years to get 30 days???? I won but lost a job that was just a con job to begin with.

Ha! This should finally put that old canard about "higher French productivity" to rest.

You americans are lazy compared to the chinese!!! they are the real men and women of this world, most work 6 days a week 9 hours a day.
You americans should be ashamed of yourselves for not being more productive, spoiled brats.
Always said that americans were lazy

Im happy being a dutch lazy bastard, get 32 (work) days (including national holidays, paid!! )vacation.
Damn us dutch and most other europeans!!!

But seriously, America is rich but the problem is that 10% has the most of the wealth.
Even the poor americans get pride out of the fact that they live in the richest and most powerfull country of the planet, if that isnt indoctrination, what the hell is??.
The only americans that know that Europe (western) is a paradise in comparisen to America, for the normal joe, or folks as dubya says it, are the americans with money, but they dont really care because they have enough money to not care....

Do you have any actual facts to back up your theory of how bad Americans suck?

Being poor in America means having a car with a $1000 stereo, 3 TVs, gold teeth, a roof over your head, clothes to wear, a microwave, air conditioning, a gas stove, section 8 to pay your rent, free college and government health care so long as you aren’t too lazy to go down and fill out the paper work.

I have seen the real poor of the world and they don’t live in the United States.

And yes, we do have our homeless populations but there will always be mentally ill people in any society.

You are so wrong. Europe is not some "paradise" unless you count rude people pissing on public streets without giving it a second thought paradise. And most of the great cities, Rome and Paris stand out in my mind, just reeked of pigeon crap. But then bird crap is culture that I just don’t understand, right, because all Americans have mullets and drive Novas (sorry to anyone sporting a mullet and driving a Nova) And don’t forget to drink the wine, because you polluted your rivers hundreds of years ago.

Paradise
