The French Election: Sarkozy Extends Lead Over Royal as French Race Closes

www.bloomberg.com

Nicolas Sarkozy extended his lead over Segolene Royal in opinion polls two days ahead of the French presidential election as the candidates closed their campaigns with appeals to core supporters.

Sarkozy, who opened a lead of 9 points in a TNS-Sofres survey completed yesterday after a May 2 debate, said last night in the southern city of Montpellier that he'd ``felt France's soul'' during his run for the presidency. The Socialist Royal, speaking in the northern city of Lille, saluted the ``miracle'' of her supporters' energy and pleaded for a massive turnout.

``For Sarkozy to lose, it would require that his electorate fails to turn out,'' said Carine Marce, an associate director at TNS-Sofres. ``That seems unlikely.''

Royal has sought to assemble a coalition ranging from communists to supporters of centrist Francois Bayrou to oppose Sarkozy, the governing-party nominee. Sarkozy, countering critics who say his anti-crime rhetoric and proposal to create a ministry of immigration and national identity make him too polarizing, has portrayed himself as the candidate best able to unite the country and spur the economy.

Since we've been involved so much with the US election, I thought to get some insight on the French Election!

The candidates are:

Nicolas Sarkozy (version of republican?)

Segolene Royal (version of Democrat?)

The french election is held I think similar to the UK process. Rounds of voting are completed and if no clear wide margin winner if found, then another round process. So far Sarkozy is in a clear lead over Royal.

What's interesting is that the turnout in France looks to be around 84% of the voting age population.

The next round is set for Sunday, May 6th, 2007

Also in other news, Royal warns that violence will occur if she is not elected! Heres the link: S OURCE

I hope Nicolas Sarkozy wins, Royal strikes me as being blatantly against America. From her comments she is always pushing the idea that Europe limit the trans-Atlantic cooperation with the US and form it's own coalition (ie. the EU). According to her Europe has to always act unanimously, ie. you can't have some countries supporting the US war in Iraq while others do not. She has also stated in not so many words that the UK needs to make a choice about having closer ties with Europe or the US. There are others reasons why I don't want her to win but those are the main ones.

Ok its official Sarkozy WINS the election!

The final count gave Mr Sarkozy 53.06%, compared with 46.94% for socialist Segolene Royal, with turnout at 85%.

Mr Sarkozy, 52, the son of a Hungarian immigrant, takes over from the 74-year-old Jacques Chirac.

Riot police have fired tear gas at a small group of demonstrators who were protesting in central Paris against Mr Sarkozy's victory.

Hopefully this will be a start to mending the relationship between France and America!

A Conservative beating a Socialist is great no matter where it happens! Even France!

Ahh, but French conservative is still very much to the Left of your own Left-wing, so not quite the same

In fact, all over Europe, including the UK, the Right is still to the Left of the US Left.... confused?
