As many of you may know by now, the non-binding resolution that condemns President Bush's new troop surge failed to make it through the Senate. Many,
including myself, wondered why they even bothered starting this resolution in the first place. It doesn't accomplish anything at all except to occupy
time and fill the calendar with useless political rhetoric.
While Congress does have the authority to ratify treaties, it's main power in controlling the President's actions is through it's control of the
purse strings. You see Congress could easily stop the war in Iraq if they would only pull funding for the war. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham
pointed out the obvious yesterday and stated that this was the reason the current resolution failed.
"The reason we are here on a Saturday playing these stupid political games, while people are off over in Iraq trying to win this war, is because our
colleagues on the other side of the aisle are afraid to take a vote on cutting off funding."

So why won't the Dems try to vote against funding the war? They have control of the majority of Congress. They choose not to vote on this because
they are spineless jellyfish. They are afraid that they would loose votes in the next election cycle. If the Democrats truly ran on the agenda of
stopping the war, they should vote to cut funding. So we have to assume that they don't really believe in what they state in press conferences. It's
nothing more than the usual hot air that leaks out of Washington D.C. these days.
