Lunar halo: with pic

What happens when you shine the light of the moon through a thin veil of clouds?



The ice crystals in the clouds refract the light, much like a circular rainbow.
You get a "Halo" around the moon.

And what exactly compelled you to take a photogragh of the moon?

In any case, this phenomenon is called 'Glory'.

I had also heard that if this is seen that the weather for the days ahead would be very cold. It is beautifull none the less.

I was compelled by lunacy.

Actually I was testing out a new camera lens.
I shoot night shots all the time!
Yep, we used to call them moon glories too.
Pretty common, but I usually don;t have a camera and tripod sitting 2 feet away. LOL

Yep, this is the leading edge of a cold front. Snow and rain headed this way.

I would take some rain, but it looks like that what we'll be getting too.
Only a little snow towards the end of the storm.
Could I get a rain check?

Where abouts d'you live, cos i live in SE London England and i saw that exact same thing. It was Massive and looked like a giant wheel in the sky, t'was very surreal.

Anyway, Well done for taking a picture of it cos now i can show others what i saw.

I'm located in The Northern Part of Nevada.
Like you said it was a pretty wide Circle..I couldn't even get the whole thing into
my field of view. A wide angle lens would have helped..

the Camera is a Sony a-100..I'm having a blast with it.
about an 8 second exposure at iso 100.
