What happens when you shine the light of the moon through a thin veil of clouds?

The ice crystals in the clouds refract the light, much like a circular rainbow.
You get a "Halo" around the moon.

Picture, taken 15 minutes ago, courtesy of yours truly!
enjoy

And what exactly compelled you to take a photogragh of the moon?

In any case, this phenomenon is called 'Glory'.

I had also heard that if this is seen that the weather for the days ahead would be very cold. It is beautifull none the less.

I was compelled by lunacy.

Actually I was testing out a new camera lens.
I shoot night shots all the time!
Yep, we used to call them moon glories too.
Pretty common, but I usually don;t have a camera and tripod sitting 2 feet away. LOL

Yep, this is the leading edge of a cold front. Snow and rain headed this way.

Wish we had some snow coming this way. All we got is stinking rain, rain, and more stinking rain. Want some rain instead?

I would take some rain, but it looks like that what we'll be getting too.
Only a little snow towards the end of the storm.
Could I get a rain check?

Great Pic! Halos are always cool to see and any excuse to look to the stars is always good in my book. For anyone interested in a more detailed description on how Halos or Glories are formed here is a good link;

Thanks folks!

AoN,

I'm located in The Northern Part of Nevada.
Like you said it was a pretty wide Circle..I couldn't even get the whole thing into
my field of view. A wide angle lens would have helped..

the Camera is a Sony a-100..I'm having a blast with it.
about an 8 second exposure at iso 100.
