Other species:Relative conscience or mere robots?

I am interested in animal behaviour and would like to know what is the general theory about animal consciousness, for example it is known that the great apes are aware of their existance but to what extent? what about other monkeys? dolphins/whales/orcs?

In which case 99% of animal/vegetable species are just bots whose whole behaviour is just defined by their innate caracteristics.
