You can't beat a Chicago lawyer.
A Polish fellow didn't like the way his doctor treated his wife for cancer. She died. So he shot the doctor in the back and killed him.
He retained one of our top Chicago criminal defense lawyers and paid him $25,000 for the defense. He gave the lawyer his passports to surrender to the
court. Since he was Polish he had both an American and Polish passport.
The facts of the case were apparently not in dispute, so the lawyer advised The Polish guy to flee the country, and sold him his Polish passport back
for the rest of his life savings, which as I recall was something like $43,000.
The guy fled to Poland, but he was so pissed off at losing all his savings he wrote a letter to the Chicago Tribune a few years later alleging the
above.
The lawyer didn't seem much concerned. He commented on TV, "He shot his doctor in the back; now he's trying to stab me in the back."
This lawyer did have two previous felony convictions.
