I was playing with Google Earth and I found this on an aircraft carrier in New York. Is it a Blackbird?

You have found the U.S.S Intrepid Museum.

www.intrepidmuseum.org
and an A-12 Blackbird spy plane(on long term loan from the National Museum of the United States Air Force) formerly in service with the CIA.

Museum Monkeys, not just for being on display anymore...

I thought they were SR-71 Blackbirds

The A-12 was the CIA single seat version of the SR-71. When they went to the USAF instead they added the back seat for the Recon Intel Officer and redesignated them the SR-71.

Not the M-21, the M-21 was the drone put on the back of the SR-71 blackbird.

Nope - the drone was the D-21 , the aircraft was the M-21

Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is the tail of the blackbird on top of a plane?

That picture looks like it was taken from a video game...look at the buildings. They look flat with no details.

It's Google Earth, try it yourself. Put on 3D BUILDINGS and go to a place that has 3D BUILDINGS, and then tilt the view like it is in the photo.

Isn't that the infamous article 122 on the deck of the Intrepid?

Warpboost: I think it is, dunno about the number exactly, but there is a recent thread on ATS that the A-51 engineers that worked on the Article blabla version of the A-12, with its rather special hull was withering away on this carrier as a museum piece. They wanted to have the jet returned for repairs or something.

Sorry to inturrupt, but there is no such thing as an M-21! Was you found was a misprint. The Aircraft in question is a two seat version of the A-12 that was called the M-12. With the M-12 as the mothership and the D-21 as the drone that rode piggyback, it is very easy to confuse the two.

Sorry!! My fingers got in the wrong hole.
M-12 is the mother ship and the D-21 is the drone.

Hate to break this to you, but it is the M-21. -21, not -12. This was intentional. They wanted to avoid giving any direct connection to the A-12, so the numbers were switched, to confuse people, hence the aircraft being numbered -21. And contrary to most beliefs, D in D-21 does not mean Drone, nor is it the 21st. The -21 was the number trick. M and D were code names. M, Mother. D, Daughter. Simple, and yet confusing to those who are not in the know. I have no idea how you came up with 'M-12'. I recommend Lockheed Skunkworks...The Official History, by Jay Miller. He had to refrain from any mention about Groom Lake in order to get as much information as he did; he even says so at the beginning. So I trust what he says in it. Not only that, in all the reading I have done, no one, EVER, call the M-21, 'M-12'. The only flub involving it was when the D-21 was first found and it was assumed it was mounted on the SR-71.
