the most shocking aspect is that they confirn the authenticity of the document, but issue no more than a weak attempt to explain themselves. They are thumbing their noses at the world

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Eighty-nine Democratic members of the U.S. Congress last week sent President George W. Bush a letter asking for explanation of a secret British memo that said "intelligence and facts were being fixed" to support the Iraq war in mid-2002 -- well before the president brought the issue to Congress for approval.

The Times of London newspaper published the memo -- actually minutes of a high-level meeting on Iraq held July 23, 2002 -- on May 1.

British officials did not dispute the document's authenticity, and Michael Boyce, then Britain's Chief of Defense Staff, told the paper that Britain had not then made a decision to follow the United States to war, but it would have been "irresponsible" not to prepare for the possibility.

The White House has not yet responded to queries about the congressional letter, which was released on May 6.

The letter, initiated by Rep. John Conyers, ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, said the memo "raises troubling new questions regarding the legal justifications for the war as well as the integrity of your own administration. ...

Its a power thing , get rid of someone unpopular like Saddam and your Country will love you. I think this has backfired on both theses people who are most unpopular with the electorate.They wont get elected again in the next elections , just imagine how much money has been spent and lives lost because they want to be seen as good leaders in the eyes of the public. Thats what you get when you elect people who are narcissistic.

Too little too late.

Leave the powers that be alone. They must know what they're doing and where they are headed and why they lied...stay tunned.... Whatever it is it should be for our own good, right?

There is nothing new in the UK info.

Exactly the same"fixing" of intelligence took place under the direction of Dick Cheney with the Office of Special Plans, and the over-riding instructions for the main intelligence agencies to not enter into dialogue with one another.

To quote an antipodean disaster term, the "litany of lies" used to cover up the corrupt agenda of the Bush administration has been very lengthy. And criminal in purpose.

Blair might have taken some minimal flak over this... Bush, hah! I laugh thusly! The man has no conception of what it would be like to deal with a press which actually "calls him out" on his misdeeds.

Interesting that cnn ran this story. It didnt even register over here in Britain and I was watching. The only MSM source I saw it in was the original Times article.

Yet again no one seems to give a damn that we are being lied to over such serious matters as invasions.

Actually I think billions of people care.

It's just that the people who care in the rogue states/invading "coalitions of the willing" do not care in an orchestrated way, and do not oust their leaders and serve justice on them. Yet.

Although this has been suspected since the beginning, this memo is real evidence and this could be a breakthrough and the beginning of an investigation into the scandal. It seems that every President has a blemmish on record, but IMHO this is the most serious.

C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.

It can't really be called "hard evidence" since it is hearsay from this "C" person. Can anyone shed any light on who "C" is?

I just watched a BBC documentary called "The Truth about the Iraq War"
It is very good it interviews intelligence sources, diplomats and intelligence analists who were involved with the lead up to war.

Information in that documentary Provides proof that Bush knowingly misled congress, this memo implies that also.

To knowingly mislead congress is an impeachable action, and in this case thousands have died for those lies.

I believe "C" is member of the British envoy that represents their intelligence experts. Their version of the CIA.

Only if the Congress that has been mislead is inclined to pursue impeachment. The current crop seems to be pretty much on the leash as far as GW is concerned. I feel that he should have been impeached by the electorate last year, based on the evidence of what his legislation has done versus what he originally promised it would do - no child left behind, clear skies, healthy forests, the list goes on and on. The Average Schmuck, however, would rather watch the next episode of "Survivor" than fill up his limited-capacity brain with actual thoughts about what is happening in and to the society he is part of. Social suicide through institutionalized ignorance.

This is lightweight.

The smoking gun is banning DOE employees from speaking to the press about aluminum tubes that were only suitable as rocket tubes and NOT as centrifuge tubes.

The Government lied to gain support for the unpopular idea of invading Iraq.
