Over here we have been getting wild weather swings for years now one week it will be minus 20 centigrade the next it will be plus 20 and all pretty rapidly .

It would make the outside hole in the ground freezer option pretty useless unless covered in ice blocks , but from my youth I seem to remember milk and stuff being outside and still frozen weeks /months without any problems , but the weather is / has changed for the better in the far north since the 70s , we no longer get 6 to 12 foot of snow drifts or many bad winters now days.
