In 2027 NASA, the European Space Agency and Space X announced a joint mission to Mars. The manned vehicle would be built by NASA and ESA with Space X in a support role.

It took 5 years to build the ship and train the astronauts.

2 weeks before the manned liftoff, Space X launched 3 supply ships with building materials, food, seeds for hydroponics, solar panels, etc.

Against all odds, the main vessel and the supply ships all landed safely on Mars and Humans had their first foothold on another planet.

In the first months after landing, the colonist had a full time job getting the habitats built, starting their hydroponic gardens and solar array. There was no time for exploration.

When there became time, 3 of the colonists set off on a mission to explore what they believed were volcanic tubes and after entering, followed it down to a depth of 1,000 feet. There they found a skeleton, encased in a environment suit.

A Human skeleton. Perfectly preserved in an extremely low oxygen atmosphere, with no weather, UV, animals or anything to disturb the remains. The environment suit was a mix of ceramic, metal and a bio plastic that is still being studied.

This was not possible. No Human had ever been farther than the Moon. They took over 100 hours of video and thousands of pictures before carefully transporting the remains back to base, where they began experiments to determine exactly what they had found.

DNA testing proved this to be 100% Human and the body to be of a Male 30 - 35.

Further testing proves that the remains are 1.2 million years old.

We have been lied to.
We are not the first.

The skeleton appeared to have been damaged from the inside, as if something had burst out of its rib cage.

Time warp.
Once the unknown bioplastic is reverse engineered, it will feature in the next expedition. One of that crew will mysteriously disappear.

Upon DNA comparison it will be determined that the missing crewman is the same individual found by the first explorers.

Sounds a lot like "Inherit the Stars'' by James P Hogan published in 1979. That story though the suited body was found on the moon and not Mars.

Excellent .

You know I've always surmised that we have crews ready for deep space missions.

The Crews of 'Nuclear Submarines ' train for years and years for deep space missions without even knowing it. Life onboard Nuclear Submarines are almost identical to life onboard a Space Ship.

First things first!

First there must be a mission to the moon in my not very humble opinion.

The last mission to the moon took place in 1972. Everything we knew about how to get there has been lost given that the missions haven't been repeated and the fact they are very costly and very dangerous. So I can't see how they're planning to go to Mars when they haven't been to the moon.
