At 17, you can be charged as an adult.

These are two completely different things, first of all. A car, no matter the value/make/model/etc, is legal to own at 17 for anyone. A handgun is not.

But, if we are going to go there, I stand by what I said: The dad is partially at fault, but not fully. The son is 90-99% responsible for his own actions at 17.

At 17, you are well aware of the differences between right and wrong, and therefore able to decide for yourself what you are going to choose to do.

If the car was swapped out for a handgun, and he went off and shot someone, he would be charged and tried as an adult.

I still stand by what I said, the dad should not have left the keys to where the son could get to them, he is at fault for that, and that only. The son chose to take the keys and the car out for a joyride, all of the actions after the thought to take the keys are on him and nobody else.
