I just saw an old Unsolved Mysteries where they did a segment on 'Red Mercury'.

Here's some background information on 'Red Mercury':

I thought it was quite interesting. But did it really happen. There are a lot of secrets in the Soviet Union they may never be known.

Cinnabar is the raw ore of which mercury comes from and it is indeed red.

Just a few I found searching around. Hope this helps all of you. I believe It could be used as a very powerful weapon. A low grade explosions with massive dumps of radiation released.

From first hearing about this "Red Mercury" in this topic, and having only read the articles linked to from here, I assume that this secretive material is a myth.

In its current knowledge, I have a weird feeling that the Russian's used the term Red Mercury knowing full-well it's historical beginnings as an almighty element... to currently phrase something they have been working on and purchasing on the black market.

In other words, Red Mercury is simply a codename the Russians are using.

"Cinnabar" native, is the ore of mercury.
"Vermilion" natural was one of the two most prized and
expensive pigments of the ancients, not counting gold.
Mercuric Sulfide.

Dispite it's code likename, this is no myth.
There are some some contributing factors here that apply to it's possibility.

Note that due to the composition in mercury containing high level of its ore Cinnabar, makeing it a heaver metal, yet remaing liquid is an appealing thought to weapon design.

Here is another Source.

Heres a interesting page on the use of mercury in the
creating of chlorine. Not really related but interesting
none the less.

Another find was a bottle of Red Mercury. Now this was a big deal for me. In order for a nuclear bomb to created fusion, you need fission, which is why nuclear missles are so complex. Back in the peak of the Cold War, the USSR came out with a story that stated they developed a chemical that could create fusion WITHOUT fission, thus creating the capabilites for the possibility of a small, cheap nuclear mega-ton bomb. It was called Red Mercury. Most people say it was just some urban legend that was whipped up by the Soviets to sell some crap on the black market for $200K-$300K per ounce (which they did). No tests have ever proved that this substance actually worked. It was produced on the USSR and Eat Germany, from what I know. It just goes to show what extent Iraq was taking to create something for mass destruction.

Now you've gone and dunnit! These were the "WMDs" we were looking for in Iraq, courtesy of Russia.

Alrighty then. I am going to the beach today, so I won't be here to monitor the replies. There are several methods for creating fusion w/o fission.

If you have the time, there is a late nuclear physcist who mentioned the possibility of red mercury fusion bombs. I can look it up later, but last I recall he was in Wiki.

Oh, and he was no crackpot.

Red Mercury or mercury oxide given in chemistry sets.
Heated and you have mercury if I recall rightly.
A possible neutron or UV or some type of bomb might be possible.
Mercury was put in lamps made by Tesla to make UV.
UV exposure will cause immune system breakdown and soon you die.

So a so called neutron or UV bomb will kill off the attacked and troops
can march in.
This may have been an Intel threat at the end of WWII but no one
can say for true if the Nazis developed all three types of so called
atomic bombs.

A UV beam from UFOs is suspected as the cause of cattle mutilations
such that when a beamed cow is found dead after a day or month,
it is taken and autopsied and placed back in the field.
OK, not by aliens just by Americans under Illuminati orders.

Samuel T. Cohen...lots of unsubstantiated claims surrounding this character. Close friend of Edward Teller for fifty years.

My guess is our intel chose the worst case scenario, and played the stupid card as strategy.

Reminds me of Polyus from the 80s. Lit a fire under the brass to get SDI moving.

'Course that is still unsubstantiated, but that doesn't mean it didn't actually happen.

I can no longer reach the ones that have gone deep inside, they would know. And the ones coming out just give hints and wait for me to put the pieces together. "Condense fact from the vapor of nuance." as Neal Stephenson would say.
