It's funny how fighter jets can so easily intercept a suspicious plane flying over Rome, but when three 747s dodge off course for 32 minutes, these 'interceptors' are no where to be found.

Two fighter planes have intercepted a suspect plane over Rome on the day of the Pope's funeral, according to Italian reports.

The Italian news agency ANSA reported that the plane was being escorted by two F-16 fighters to a military base after entering a no-fly zone imposed for the funeral.

It quoted Italy's air force chief as saying intelligence had indicated that a bomb was on board the aircraft which was heading toward Rome's second airport Ciampino.

The Italian Defence Ministry has made no immediate confirmation

When you go to the BBC page and click on the scroll, you are directed to a 404 page. At least I was.

This is kind of wierd. Why would anyone want to bomb the popes funeral? I know about the 'terrorist mentality', but I just cant understand it...

*shakes head in disgust*

FOX news is saying "No bomb Found on Plane"

this could just be pilot error, flying in the wrong area. But on a day like today, i don't think the Italians are over reacting.

All things considered, one can't blame Italy for being cautious at the moment.

I didn't even wanna bring it up, but all day long yesterday, I thought that with all the world leaders at the viewing together at one time, what better opportunity to take them all out, from a terrorists perspective?

I'm just glad I was wrong...

mpeake, i was thinking the same thing, but I realized that several arab leaders would be attending the funeral including Iran's Khatami and then I thought maybe the extremists wouldn't want to risk hurting one of their own.

Luckily the arab leaders felt now would not be the best time to die for the extremist cause

Oh please. Before 9/11 we had no reason to scramble military jets to intercept a commercial airliner. And you know that. The events of 9/11 never happened any where else before... so no one knew what was about to happen. And you know that also. Stop acting like an idiot saying stuff like "but when three 747s dodge off course for 32 minutes, these 'interceptors' are no where to be found. "

- Sorry but as one of the 9/11 investigations showed the US authorities were alerted - on several occassions - to the possibility that just such an attack had been considered and was suspected of being planned - right down to terrorist suspects training to fly planes.

Sorry you feel so tetchy about it but thems the facts.

Thankfully today passed off without any terrible and wicked drama although I do think it's sad people can't report this kind of incident without the jumping to such lurid conclusions.

Where did anyone get the idea the plane "may be carrying explosives"! from other than making it up from their own imaginations?

More information

The ANSA agency quoted intelligence sources as saying there were fears that a bomb might have been on board the plane. It later said no bomb was found......

ANSA said the aircraft was a Lear Jet 131 (search) executive plane from Belgrade bound for Rome's Ciampino, which serves both military and civilian aircraft. Ciampino airport was closed Friday for the pope's funeral.
