The Mmmm Matrix

I love the films and used to think it was watertight.

Question...

If they used humans for energy, they need to feed humans, I suspect it isn’t possible to make food that gives off more energy than it takes to make it?

So the Matrix, without the sun, there is no free energy source to grow us?!

Maybe (?) humans have a good way of processing food into electricity?
If the Matrix computer found out how to make a nutritious slurry from leftovers (farming Zion?) and reprocessing waste, it could explain. Wasn't it about humans being like batteries, too?

Just spilled some thoughts, no claim of scientific correctness.

IIRC in one of the films(or possibly in the Animatrix)they explain the humans are fed with goop made from dead humans.
I think there is a shot of some of the machines scooping up bodies for processing into food.
Not 100% sure,its been a while since I watched.
At the time my theory was that the machines were not just using the humans as batteries-they were also using their brains as processing power for the matrix-ie you are plugged into and experiencing the matrix,but you are also building it at the same time-like a human bit torrent sort of.
