The blaze broke out in the early hours of Thursday at the Lubrizol plant in Rouen - a large factory that is classified as Seveso, or high risk, because of the nature of the chemicals it produces.

residents have been warned to stay indoors and limit their movements as far as possible today, as a precaution.

There were around 200 firefighters battling the blaze on Thursday morning, and plumes of smoke could be seen from several kilometres away.

The fire broke out at around 2.50am on Thursday, followed shortly afterwards by a series of explosions

Makes me think of the recent string of incidents in Russia, the oil refinery attack in Saudi Arabia and the Notre Dame Cathedral fire... Notre Dame (Paris) and Lubrizol chemical factory (Rouen) are in direct vicinity to the river Seine.

Rouen also has a Cathedral named Notre Dame (de Rouen), again close to the river Seine.

Reporting from France here :

The fire started around 02:00 this morning in an American owned chemical plant called Lubrizol specialised in making additives for lubrifiants :

The Lubrizol Corporation is a provider of specialty chemicals for the transportation, industrial and consumer markets.

These products include additives for engine oils and other transportation-related fluids, additives for industrial lubricants, and additives for gasoline and diesel fuel.

In addition, Lubrizol makes ingredients and additives for personal care products, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, specialty materials, including plastics technology, and coatings in the form of specialty resins and additives.

TextLubrizol is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway and is headquartered in Wickliffe, Ohio. UNITED STATES

The company generated $6.5 billion in revenue in 2016 and has an employee headcount of approximately 8,300 people globally.

Eric R. Schnur is the current president, chairman and CEO.

I called a friend of ours this morning around 08:00 to ask how things are going as she lives in Rouen about 1km away South from the fire and she can see it from where she lives.

She has told me that practically the whole of the North of the city is on lockdown with all bridges and main roads closed (all schools closed) and residents within a 500 metre distance have been told to stay indoors...

500 BLOODY METRES!!!!

She called back her parents who live in a small community just outside of the North of Rouen called "Bois Guillaume" around 08:46 and her parents told her that it is still night time where they live due to the smoke (The town is about 18 kms away)

Firemen are saying that they are witnessing burning liquids similar to burning and slow running lava.

Due to slight winds the smoke is going over Rouen in a Northern direction right now and not looking good at all.

Rain is expected this afternoon, which is not good in a way as this will bring all the toxic soot down...

What pisses me off big time is that the media are saying that initial toxicity results say that there are no worries concerning acute toxicity for the moment and that other toxicity tests will be done during the day...

Reminds me a little of the Mitterand days when his government said that the Chernobyl cloud stopped at the border...

I have advised my friend to take the day (or a couple off) and go further south until all is clear.

Its not looking good in Rouen right now.

My positive thoughts go out to all those who are and will be affected long term by this terrible disaster as IT IS NOT OVER yet.

Kindest respects

ETA : The bloody prefecture has just said that due to the rain and the danger that soot may fall, people must WASH THEIR HANDS!!!

Seriously.... In a SEVESO class 4 environment... wash you hands!!!!????...

It would seem to me that it might be safer to breathe in the school instead of sending the kids out on the street to go home. I guess the schools don't want to get blamed when the kids get sick, they do not want to be liable.

The schools were all shut down by the local prefecture.

Just for info, my friend in Rouen texted me to say that on the North side of the city there is greasy soot everywhere.

Not getting much on the news over here right now as MSM is focusing on the death of Jaques Chirac.

mea culpa - in the sea of utter bollox - i misread " walking distance "

but - how many permutations did you run through till you got the " right " answer ??????????????

google walking is a farce - at any distance over a couple of km across town - no one inthier right mind would actually follow that route on foot

but hey you " win "

you use the seine length in KM , then switch to miles for the cathedral > chemical plant walk

what is so special about the distance from a cathedral > chemical plant ??

apart from the obvious cherry picked noncsence of " it fits the narrative "

Well, looks like there's 'fallout'!

Suspicions grew further after Rouen residents were cautioned against eating fruit and vegetables from their gardens, while farmers have been banned from selling their local produce, including milk.
