Ukraine's former interior minister Yury Kravchenko was found dead this morning in his home, with the probable cause being suicide, as he was due to be in court over being implicated in the murder of an opposition journalist. Apparantly he had died of a gun shot wound as two police officers were arrested who had allegedly carried out the assassination of the journalist, and and would likely have named him as the man who hired them.

The death comes two days after Prosecutor General Svyatoslav Piskun said that authorities had arrested two police officers as Gongadze's alleged assassins, that they knew who had ordered the murder, and that Kravchenko would be questioned in connection with the case on Friday.

Gongadze, who had been frequently critical of former president Leonid Kuchma in articles in his Internet newspaper, Ukrainska Pravda, disappeared in September 2000 and his headless body was found in woods outside Kiev two months later.

His murder became a symbol of corruption in the ousted regime of Kuchma after several top officials, including Kuchma himself, were implicated in the slaying in tapes smuggled out of the country by Kuchma's former bodyguard.

If the official ruling is suicide then it looks like Yury Kravchenko knew he was finished and decided to take the easy way out. It seems like the corruption was rife a few years ago with what these men got up to, and I'm sure many people of the Ukraine will see him taking his life into his own hands as a blessing, even if they would've liked to have seen him dragged over the coals first.

After the release of the 'Melnychenko tapes' & then the botched Yuschenko affair,it's the price Kravchenko had to pay for failing Vlad The Derailer.Kuchma might suffer a similar fate.
