So, this just happened - tweeted by Andrew Mock from Australia (of course, where else?):

68mm just fell in the last hour at Kununurra. Flushed all the cane toads out of my brothers dam. Some of them took the easy way out - hitching a ride on the back of a 3.5m python.

Apparently cane toads are poisonous and that's why they can get away with such juvenile snake surfing behaviour without getting eaten.

If you are thinking those toads were just trying to take advantage of the snake you are probably right:

Amphibian expert Jodi Rowley, a senior lecturer in biological sciences at the University of NSW, threw further light on the story, pointing out on Twitter that the male cane toads were in fact trying to mate with the python.

Cane toads have been an ecological disaster for Australia. While this is amusing, it does indicate how totally impotent Australian wildlife is when faced with such an invasive and debilitating species.

At first contact, there were over 250,000 aborigines in Australia. The massacres ended in the 1920 leaving no more than 60,000. Since then, the population has grown, and by the next century as many as 30,000 people may legitimately claim aboriginal descent. Aborigines were traditionally nomads.

Well, after further looking into it, looks like they were introduced there in the 1935 after the massacre.

Native to South and mainland Middle America, Cane toads were introduced to Australia from Hawaii in June 1935 by the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations, now the Sugar Research Australia, in an attempt to control the native grey-backed cane beetle (Dermolepida albohirtum) and French's beetle (Lepidiota frenchi).

I don't know why, but I find it extremely amusing that all the frogs are pointed towards the head of the snake, except for one is on backwards 😂

I saw that pair of toads in the picture and before I read the bit at the bottom, I thought it looked like that. My thoughts were, "That poor python, but at least those males aren't currently making more toads!" Way to take one for the team.
