SpaceX got the green light this week from US authorities to put a constellation of nearly 12,000 satellites into orbit in order to boost cheap, wireless internet access by the 2020s.

That's a hell of alot; heck! I mean for one big shove it is by one Company all at once. They don't muck around do they. Chinas got a bit of competition now. The planet's turning Wifi I really think so.

Lets hope tech doesn't gravitate to 6G. Or Atlantis is going bye bye.

Funny. I was just reading an article the other day about the amount of space junk and current satellites in our orbit.
How they are already posing a problem for shuttles.
Now theres going to be an addition 12000 items floating around up there?
awesome

I run an ISP.

That project is a boon. It might help a hundred people at most.

Otherwise it's all the same KU/KH band nonsense which has zero reliability in getting

a signal reliably anywhere due to lots of interference.

Most people just want this because they are in love with Elon for being Elon.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Like most everything Elon Musk does this is big on personality and small on results. He needs to go away to his smoking room and let the adults handle things.

Like what? The 3’s are rolling off the assembly line. First phase of the tunnel is done, and his space program is moving right along. He’s a doer not a right wing blowhard. a reply to: oriondc

I love me some SpaceX news but when I read about this awhile back it reminded of a documentary or movie that I watched when sleepy. It was about a time when humans couldn’t leave earth because of all the space junk.
OHHHHH wait it was a documentary based off a book. Can’t remember the name though.

Does anyone believe providing wifi to the people is the real objective?

Gotta love the government giving control over infrastructure to a for-profit monopolistic corporation with an alarming safety record, run by a known fraudster.

Remember Iridium. That satellite constellation system allow satellites to send information directly to each other, had coverage of the entire globe, allowed voice communications anywhere but did have low data bandwidth. With modern compression algorithms and hardware the bandwidth would be magnitudes larger.

No, and that's a really good question.
