At what age do babies understand human speech?

My mum admitted in later years that she discouraged the babysitter from handling me, which may have meant that the girl wasn't talking to me either. I can't see why having lots of attention should slow things down.
My own first words, you may have noticed, were at TWO and a half, so don't start worrying about the grandchildren yet.

Thanks Yes i can see, we all can, that they are Very intelligent, and twins are known to have a "secret language" between them. She is sending them to creche next year because she needs some time to herself. We shall see how that works out. I have no idea but i do suspect that she will have trouble with one of the two, one of them is Very attached to her. I mean obviously they both love her above all else ,she is their mom. But one is very independent and the other one cannot be away from her side for a minute, so idk..
