According to recently released information, the ratio of CEO pay to median worker pay has exceeded expectations by large margins.

www.rt.com...

I wonder what a healthy margin would be?

Naomi Klein discussed this and provided data from the 50's and 60's in her book Disaster Capitalism. Fascinating data, supported by this recent news.

Sorry if it's in the wrong forum.

not sure of relevance of title/OP. CEO pay is not much of an indicator of Capitalism success/failure.

speaking of capitalism
China and Viet Nam are increasingly deemphasizing their traditional planned socialist economies. Cuba is a failed state and soon to undergo regime change. Venezuela has totally failed.

so state-controlled economies are failing all over.

For those into statistics, and many are, it doesn't get any better. Klein thought it was bad at 400, and the Walmart figure is awesome, for a bean counter.

And the mods will move it as they deem.

Vast majority of wal-mart workers are unskilled labor making minimum wage or not much above. A better statistic would be compared to the corporate employees.

CEO pay is irrelevant. I'm sure LeBron James makes 1200 times the popcorn vendor in a stadium... Some actors probably make 1200 times the production assistant on a movie set.

Sorry but,

I run a business.

Employees are incredibly lazy. Don't care about hearing how some work after hours blah blah blah.

99% of you would have psychological meltdowns after year 1 of trying to run a successful, scaling company. Try and get most to even work an hour over or on weekends and they have a total sob story as to why they cant blah blah blah.

I completely understand why the pay is the way it is for many.

Well employs follow managements lead SRITX .
So you mite change how you deal with employs .
Dont get me wrong it takes a wile to develop a good team .
And dont take me wrong employs do have familys and life they need to deal with .

If you expect robots you should invest in robots .
I mananged teams off and on my self ( really dont enjoy it )
But I have gotton the best work out of what would be considered the worst people by making sure they knew what they would gte from doing the work faster better .

really it was simple I worked for a circus ( yea really ) ( No I was not the clown lol )
I helped put up the tent for the biggest road circus in the country ( America )
300 feet long 98 feet wide 48 feet tall covered the entire infield of a football field seated up to 3500 people .

Anyway get up 5 am EVERY day take the tent up pull it down move .
So I go to the men and say . You all want to get drunk ? Stoned ? layed ?
we can do this one of two ways we can mess around all day in which case you do non of that or we can get this done fast .

Well I got that tent up and finished in 4 hours working my but off right beside them . Needless to say I was a very liked guy .

So what motivation do your employs have ?? Non problem nothing but the same promise of money the same boring thing day after day .
Most people are NOT self motivated One of the biggest jobs a manager has is MOTIVATING his employs .
You cant do that you will always fail having the best from them .

Sounds like you either hire the wrong people or have no clue how to motivate people.

Either way if production is like that, or the employees are lazy I've found that it's either that management is a PITA to work for, set goals are often unattainable, or the employees aren't challenged enough.

Whatever the case, the CEOs have been cashing in big time in the last 40 years.

Sorry but,

I run a business.

My employees work 21 days on, 10 off. They are paid 90k salary with free health care to start. They owe the business 210 hours a month. Generally they run about 250. They work in the oil field... not a place for the faint at heart.

They live 800 miles from where we work. Their gas to and from home is paid and they get a company truck when they are on site. Housing is provided.

They have no problem staying a day later, coming back a day sooner. They work around our build dates. In return, I let them leave early on their last day for the drive back, buy an occasional steak dinner and make sure that any days they NEED off are worked into the schedule. Any personal issues are solved between everyone. They are happy and productive and so am I. We are a multi-million dollar company with 11 people and expanding.

Perhaps the business you are running doesn't work. Perhaps you just don't have the skills to work with employees or putting a good team together. Perhaps you suck at picking your employees. There are troubles with the current new working generation, I give you that.

But just saying EVERYONE is lazy and incompetent is a cop out.

Look in the mirror and work on it yourself. Then remember for every 10 lazy bastards there is one jewel in the rough. Find them. Then make it work.

The problem is clearly your attitude.

The key is they are employees NOT Robots.

There is a limit to the work you can get out of someone. Plenty of studies have shown that 45 hours is the upper limit of what most people can take over a long period of time. Between 45 and 55 hours productivity then drops off to the point the extra hours do not increase productivity. Beyond that then the extra hours are counter productive and you get a loss of productivity to the point you will get less work out of say 60 hour weeks over 3 months than you would if you just got them doing normal 40 hours shifts.

That is not because people are lazy, its because we all have a limit to how much work we can do before our health suffers.

It comes down to the old saying "work smarter, not harder".

And this encompasses vac cation days as wel, giving less holidays is actually a false economy. It is why most country's set the legal minimum at 28 days or even in country that don't have minimums, a lot of company's set at around 28 days as it actually increases productivity beyond if you gave less or no holiday.

This comes from someone who owed a successful business for 3 years and went by the above methods not because I was "nice" but because I wanted maximum productivity, which meant treating employees like humans not robots.

That's the biggest HS lie ever. Oil field workers scam the system routinely by filing for unemployment for the times the business is slow. You are probably the one that helps them scam the system too.

You sound like a terrible boss and I would never want to work for you. Treat the employees well and they'll reciprocate. Treat them like trash and well you are already witness to this.

"The Business" has never really been slow. Now, there is a rush here and there and some slower times, but I don't know ANYONE in the oilfield who has ever filed for unemployment up here. Texas maybe?

Oilfield business you are working for gets slow? You just hire on for the next business. Or in my case, find a niche market in the oilfield. Ever see a flare burning? That means I have a job. Forever.

So at least now we know why you suck as a businessperson. You make assumptions on people with no rational or logical reason. So you're a bigot. I can see why you only get crap labor... as a manager, you get what you deserve.

So again, if you want to know why everyone around you sucks... look in the mirror. Perhaps you should work FOR someone for awhile, someone with decent management skills. Maybe something positive will rub off on you.

Edited to add, if times were so slow that I would have to lay someone off for awhile, how would that be "scamming" the unemployment system? That's what the system is there for, after all. You realize that in some states, like mine, the employer pays 100% of the unemployment tax which goes into an account for the employee and if he/she never uses it, the department keeps it? It goes not to the state, but to the Department of Unemployment, which is a privately owned company. You really don't know anything about business at all, do you? Managing a Pizza Hut or something... or perhaps a sunglass kiosk in a mall?

Weird.

Some interesting points made here.

To me the numbers presented simply show that perhaps capitalism has run amok, that the ratio constantly growing makes the point that the gulf between workers and owners is growing ever wider.

This cannot be a good sign for a society that proclaims itself the very center of democratic principles, where every man can make a clean start and support his family, maybe provide for the education of children and a vacation time during the year.

These numbers seem to make a joke of the idea of any sort of economic equality.
