Wisconsin’s 100 percent Reduction in the State Property Tax

Looks like the Governor of Wisconsin has announced a property tax reduction !!

Apparently a 100% cut in the State's share !!

They claim it's a $3000 savings so far.

Governor Scott Walker released his Weekly Radio Address today titled “Wisconsin’s 100% Reduction in the State Property Tax.”


Hi, Scott Walker here.

This year, you may notice something new on your property tax bill: a big zero under the state portion of the total property tax. That’s because our state budget completely eliminates the state property tax levy.

That’s right: 100% of Wisconsin taxpayers will see a 100% reduction on their state property tax bill.

Now, as promised, property taxes will be lower in 2018 than they were when we took office in 2010, adding up to nearly $3,000 in savings for a typical household. In fact, property taxes as a percentage of personal income are at their lowest levels since World War II.

I wish New Jersey would do that. Not only do I have to foot the bill for the mooches in Trenton but I have to pay for other cities in my county because they're broke too.

Govt's are expensive to run.

The state will still require a min amount of $$ for critical services that the citizens expect. I would look for pain in other areas of citizen govt interaction . At least the pain will be (hopefully) spread evenly through out the population in stead of just property owners.

Wisconsin is pretty good with their budget.

Wisconsin’s budget finished the fiscal year that ended June 30 with a $579 million surplus, $126 million more than expected and the fourth-largest surplus of the past two decades.

The amount was higher than expected mostly because agencies spent about $116 million less than they were authorized to spend.

I live in Wisconsin and my area is more fiscally responsible than anywhere I have ever lived. My property tax has decreased five years in a row, yet my house is gaining value.

Coming from Illinois the bar was real low though.

That is the real question. Re election campaigns love gimmicks.

Look at Massachusetts (taxachussetts).They don't require massive federal aid to run the state. Compare that to South Carolina.

However they may sincerely be able to balance it out. In which case bravo...

what was the income stream from state property tax in 2016 ?

budget surpluses disappear VERY` quickly when you cut of a revenue stream

the OP source claim a average saving of $3000 / household / year with zero state property tax

the $579 million surpluss is not going to last very long plugging that short fall

Because of the growth we've had in the budget, because of the positive economy, the fact that more people are working than before - all those things put us in a good position. Not only to cover this, but, as I mentioned, to put more dollars in our classrooms than ever before, to make all the other investments we've done this budget," Walker said in a Wednesday trip

In my town, we have 3 police departments. One works and the other two are retired. They all vote Republican and they hate socialism. What do you call Republicans who don't work and live off of other people's local taxes?
