A magnificent panorama of more than 3,000 stone columns soaring as high as 200 meters into the air! Welcome to Zhangjiajie, a region of natural wonder in China that's registered as a World Heritage Site. Although a popular destination for tourists and a model for the scenic backdrop of the film Avatar, much of the area has restricted access and is virtually unknown. With the permission of local authorities, we succeeded in filming this wonderland with a high-resolution 4K camera mounted on a drone. Join us as we explore the mystery of a mountain with a giant hole located 1,000 meters above the valley floor; discover rice paddies cultivated on steep precipices; and document the lives of local minority peoples. Travel back in time to retrace the ancient roots of Zhangjiajie in the Han dynasty, and explore the secrets of geologic change that gave rise to these dramatic columns of stone. And, as a special treat, witness the rare occurrence of the miraculous Torrent of Mist issuing from the mountain hole like white smoke from a dragon's mouth. Our bird's-eye view highlights the special appeal of Zhangjiajie for all to see!

Absolute stunning documentary! The Earth is awesome.
Watch in 1080p on a rainy day. Enjoy!

Probably from soil erosion due to de forestation and over irrigation.

At least thats what is causing the problem today. Jared Diamond's book, "Collapse" explains it better.

Heres a much shorter read:

Wow, they look similar to the Hoodoo's of Bryce Canyon.
Probably the same kind of erosion at work?

the way you didnt watch the video, made an assumption about the explanation of the erosion, drew a conclusion then posted your assumption, like it was an explanation, is an example of how so much misinformation spawns out of ignorance....

youtu.be...
at 35:25 they explain the cause of the erosion.
under an ocean the seabed was made of quartz sand which 380 million years ago was elevated out of the ocean, dried, then with atmosphere and rain eroded till just the columns remain.

no soil erosion deforestation or irrigation....

bryce is mostly limestone, its erosion is accelerated by its freeze thaw cycles more then anything, but similar erosion really.

Ignorance about Chinas number one problem , soil erosion, abounds.

Possibly if it came out of the ocean, there would have been trees, bushes and vegetation at ground level. Then it slowly moved upwards, being eroded by rain, frost and sun. That huge hole really amazes me.

Beautiful video, especially when watched on fullscreen on a large monitor.

nice try, that is offtopic, your attempt to claim an off topic subject as the explanation for your incorrect reply to the op is just another example this time demonstrating how stubbornness can prevent the arrogant from admitting to their mistakes.

but hey at least you learned something from all this..... hopefully....

Maybe you will to if you read "Collapse", by Jared Diamond. The chapter on China, at least.
