"The Space People’s choice" for President of the USA : Gabriel Green – Newsletters (PDFs)

Discussions of UFOs in relation to US politics is nothing new. Calls for revelation of “the truth” and for congressional hearings regarding UFOs date back to the relatively early days of the modern UFO era. Indeed, one man sought to be elected President on the basis of – among other things – claims that he was being supported by friendly aliens and that they had the solutions to all our earthly problems.

Gabriel Green was one of the people in the 1950s (commonly referred to as “contactees”) that claimed to have contact with friendly being from other planets. Although not as well-known as some other “contactees” (e.g. George Adamski, Ray Stanford, Truman Bethurum, George Van Tassel, Orfeo Angelucci and Howard Menger), Gabriel Green is an interesting guy. After all, there aren’t many people within ufology that have run for the office of the President of the United States of America.

Yep, Gabriel Green sought to be elected President of the United States of America in 1960 … as “The Space People’s Choice”…







The history of his campaign can be traced via various newsletters that he published from 1957 onwards. The AFU in Sweden has very kindly scanned collections of several defunct periodicals which were edited/published by Gabriel Green (and veteran American ufologist Barry Greenwood has helpfully filled in some gaps in one of those collections). Issues up to 1964 are now in the public domain due to a failure to renew their copyright.

These newsletters are a rather strange mix of purported messages from friendly Space Brothers (most received telepathically, but with some received during face-to-face meetings and some received by short-wave radio…), together with details of flying saucer conventions and groups, plus details of proposed social reforms (ranging from correcting social injustices to developing a system for shopping from home…) and calls for political support.






In 1957, the first issue of Gabriel Green’s “Thy Kingdom Come” newsletter outlined the rather grand goals of Gabriel’s UFO group, which included “to help create greater understanding and cooperation between the people of earth and the people from space” and to help establish “The Kingdom of Heaven on Earth”.



That newsletter was soon explicitly seeking political support. Issue 3 of “Thy Kingdom Come” (in March 1957) stated that “If our present elected representatives won’t tell us the truth, let’s elect some new ones who will”.

The fourth issue of “Thy Kingdom Come” (in April-May 1957) discussed the formation of the “Amalgamated Flying Saucer Clubs of America” or “AFSCA”, with goals which included providing “greater pressure on congress”. That issue called for flying saucer groups to unite asserted the following:

There is now such a voluminous accumulation of evidence of the existance of flying saucers from outer space that we don’t need to have a saucer each person's back yeard to to prove it to them. What we need is better dissemination of existing evidence”.

It seems that in 1957, Gabriel Green’s own political ambitions were relatively modest. Issue 5 of “Thy Kingdom Come” (in June 1957) refers to George Van Tassels’ intention to made a bid for the presidency while Gabriel Green himself was only intending to stand for election as a congressman in

With the tenth issue of Gabriel Green’s newsletter, the name changed from “Thy Kingdom Come” to “AFSCA World Report”, placing more emphasis on the role of the “Amalgamated Flying Saucer Clubs of America” and less on God. This change was expressed to be “calculated to appeal to a larger number of people than the select, but important few, towards whom ‘The Kingdom Come’ was slanted”.

By Issue 16 of “AFSCA World Report”, Gabriel Green used slogans to call upon those “fed up” with the “same hypocritical promises” to vote for him. His slogans included “The Space People’s Choice”, “America Needs a Space Age President” and “Gabriel Green – Your Write-in Space-Age Candidate (His heart is with the people)” He appealed for votes from those who wanted “free energy”, “real peace” and “the people told the truth rather than kept in planned ignorance of the most vital information in all history” and “a passport to Paradise on earth instead of oblivion”.

While Gabriel Green’s newsletters contained a considerable amount of detail of his platform and plenty of calls for support, those newsletters are remarkably quiet about the level of support he actually obtained during the 1960 election.






I’ll leave each of you to see if you recognise any parallels between the facts outlined above in relation to Gabriel Green and the facts regarding certain modern UFO “researchers”, their regular calls for financial support and their failure to indicate what has been achieved with the money donated to them...

Oh, and I’ll leave it to our American members to consider whether Gabriel Green was any less credible than one of the candidates in their current presidential election…
