A lot of people have been saying that this is a great first time reflector, it is a Dobsonian so very stable. If you got this and a 2x Barlow I think you would be a happy bunny.

It appears to be in your price range, and I checked out the user reviews. There is less need for set up with collimation, you could always buy a collimating eyepiece and still have enough for a few cans of beer out of the $500.
