I couldn't resist that one. My other thought was maybe someone to arm a nuke if it ever needed to happen. I reckon Jim is most likely correct though.

Actually no.

The original design called for a third crew member to perform as a navigator/EW operator. The CSAF at the time basically said, "There ain't gonna be no damn navigator on my new bomber", so they eliminated the seat and role. It was cheaper to leave the hatch.

He was an utter son of a bitch who wanted to leave his stamp on the Air Force and make a name for himself. He ended up the most hated CSAF in history. People still spit when they say his name.
